Does Davido own the private jet he often flies around in? When he’s booked for events, who covers the cost of fueling the private jet—himself or the show promoter/event organizer?

Burna Boy and his immediate team also travel to events and shows on a private jet, while the rest of his over 32 crew members fly first class on a commercial flight to the same event. Upon arrival, they often occupy an entire floor of a 4-star or 5-star hotel in the city.

While we see them living a lavish lifestyle, most of these expenses are covered by show promoters and event organizers, and they are outlined in a document called an artist rider.

What Is an Artist Rider?

An artist rider is a detailed document outlining the specific requirements and conditions an artist expects to be fulfilled before performing at an event. It’s typically attached to the performance contract and serves to ensure the artist’s needs—both professional and personal—are met.

The artist rider can be divided into several sections, with the transportation, hospitality, and technical rider being the most important.

What’s Typically Included in an Artist Rider?

1. Transportation

Specifies how the artist and their team will travel to the event city and venue.

For top-tier artists like Flavour, Wizkid, Davido, or Burna Boy, promoters often provide a chartered jet. If the artist owns a private jet, the promoter is responsible for fueling it, paying the pilot, and covering parking fees during the event.

2. Dressing Room and Hospitality Requirements
Outlines hotel accommodations, dressing room setup, and special requests. This could include luxury suites, specific décor, or even OS for the night.

3. Security
Details the on-ground security arrangements, including personnel to es**rt the artist and secure the event venue.

4. Ground Transportation
Specifies the type of vehicles required for airport transfers and movement within the city. No artist wants to be picked up in an outdated car.

5. Complimentary Passes
Some artists request free passes for their friends, press, or other external individuals.

6. Technical/Stage Setup
The most important part of the rider, detailing the sound equipment, lighting, DJ setup, and other technical requirements. Artists like Burna Boy, Asa, or Flavour have a very strict technical rider due to performance style, there is always a part of the performance contract that can exempt them from performance if the technical requirements on the rider are not fulfilled.

7. Food and Drinks
Artists often have dietary preferences and avoid certain meals before performances. Requests can also include specific drinks, snacks, and even substances to enhance their performance state.
Fireboy DML says Nigerian foods especially jollof rice is included on his rider if he is performing anywhere in the world

Starting from tomorrow till Saturday at 5PM everydayI’ll break down the key sections of an artist rider in detail, one post at a time.

Tag an artist or promoter who needs to learn this! Together, we’ll unlock the secrets to professional event planning and ensure every performance is a win.

🍀🪐🙌 30 days of consistency will change your year.
A year of consistency will change your life.
A decade of consistency will change the world.
Consistency wins because it builds
momentum. And momentum is the magic that unlocks 5 year goals in 6 months. When you're consistent, you're sharp. You're aligned.
Constantly moving. Constantly improving.
You cringe at you 3 months ago because your rate of progress is so fast. You show up daily regardless of your mood. You see opportunities where others see only problems.
You feel alive. You feel energised. Because you earned it. Because you're ruthlessly consistent.

Songwriting Tips

 Songwriting is a complex process that requires a combination of creativity, experience, and collaboration.
 It involves starting with the main melody or central chorus, focusing on rhythm, structure, and cadence, and building a solid lyrical hook for the chorus.
 Creating a memorable song requires a clear idea of the theme, recording spur-of-the-moment inspiration, and incorporating a wide range of music styles.
 Writing should be fun and challenging, as emotions will likely be reflected in the lyrics.
 Collaboration with other musicians can help overcome writer's block and accelerate the songwriting process.
 Starting simple and building on the track can accelerate the process and help work out the structure of the song.
 Taking breaks from the instrument or lyrics pad can help get creativity flowing and prevent confusion.
 Keep an open mind when judging your own songs, as musicians and songwriters are often our worst critics.
 Asking for feedback from trusted individuals can provide valuable insights into improving the song.
 Failing to succeed is a common struggle, but there is no secret formula for success.
 Hard work, positivity, and talent are the key to success.

Last year, Burna Boy bought back the master rights to songs he released under his former label, Aristokrat Records. This move is a smart one because, no matter how much wealth you acquire during your active years, master rights are your greatest asset as a musician.

But what exactly are master rights, and why are they such a huge asset?

That will be the first part of my series for this week. I started the introduction on Saturday.

RECORD DEAL CLAUSES EVERY UPCOMING ARTIST SHOULD KNOW: Part 1 - Master Rights

1. Ownership and Control of Masters (Master Rights)

Explanation: The master recordings are the original versions of your songs. Whoever owns the masters has control over how the music is used, licensed, and monetized. Traditionally, record labels own the masters, especially in a 360 deal.

For an artist, retaining control over your masters is crucial because they are your most valuable asset but not easy to acquire if you started your career with a record label before hitting the limelight. If you own your masters, you control how your music is used in movies, commercials, video games, or even sampled by other artists. You also earn royalties directly from your music’s usage.

Here are some real-life examples:

EME still owns Wizkid’s Ayo and Superstar albums.

HKN Music owns Davido’s debut album Omo Baba Olowo.

G-Worldwide still owns Kizz Daniel's master rights for Woju, Laye, and New Era album. He only moved the songs from his old profile (Kiss Daniel) to his current profile (Kizz Daniel) after reconciling with is former label boss.

Aristokrat Records used to own Burna Boy’s L.I.F.E and On A Spaceship albums until he bought back the rights last year.

All songs that Korede Bello, Reekado Banks, and Tiwa Savage released under Mavin Records still belong to the label, while they receive a percentage of streaming royalties for these songs, Mavin Records owns the master rights, meaning the label can license the songs for movies, games, or even samples without the artist’s direct consent.

Clause to get your master right:

For unknown artists, convincing a label to give you complete control over your masters can be difficult because they helped build your image during your early career.

However, you can negotiate a buy-back clause when signing a record contract. This allows the label to own the masters initially but gives you the right to purchase part of it or the full rights after a set period (e.g., 5-10 years) for a pre-agreed amount.

This compromise ensures that:

The label profits from their investment.

You have the opportunity to regain control of your music in the future.

Why This Matters:

Master rights represent your long-term wealth. No matter how popular you become during your active career, your masters will continue to generate income for you and your children long after you've stopped making music.

Final Thoughts:

The music industry is a business. Record labels aren’t charity organizations — they are in business to make a profit. But as an artist, you need to protect your long-term interests.

Don't rush to sign any contract without understanding what you're giving up

What made Burnaboy stand out as an artiste from Nigeria to win a Grammy Award

Burnaboy has been creative and didn't want to sound like anybody else right from his debut. He came out with his own vibe, very unique sound. His sound was a mixture of Afrobeat and Reggae dance hall

He is an embodiment of all genre of music. He has a way of combining any genre of music into his own Afrobeat.

The mother genre of his beat is Afrobeat but he infused the following genre to his sound ...DANCEHALL, REGGAE, TRAP ,ROAD TRAP(british gangster rap).

He combined all these genre into his own style. As an artiste you have to be flexible enough to change or adapt to our ever changing world. You need to be unique and flexible.
Slimcase became a one time artiste because of his focus on one genre of music.Rema used to be a rap artiste but his real genre is trap. But Rema is multi- talented that is why he is doing great and will continue to trend.

Stand out with your own brand but be adaptive to follow the latest trend...infuse the latest trend to your own style.

Burnaboy based his brand on Africa...African Giant(album)...remember it's Africans(afro americans) that started hip hop music.Burna boys brand went across the whole Africa.
Then he came out with Twice As Tall album that earned him the much talked accolade.

Twice As Tall album contains legendary sounds. He featured Senegalese legends( Naughty By Nature),He also featured American artistes like Stormzy and Chris Martin etc.He did all these to give the album international leverage.

Twice As Tall album contains all the genre of music. Before you drop an album, make sure you drop what everybody can relate to.The production of the album was top notch cos there were inputs by Puff Daddy and Snoop Dog.

Hardwork pays...upcoming artistes learn the act very well before looking for the gains...Don't imitate just polish your style and sell it...you will definitely get your own audience.Mindless Copying and imitation kills career faster than you know...
Learn from burna boy today ...Ph guy that conquered the world...You can do better!

One love guys till I come again...Peace Out!!!
