Let’s have a “Family Meeting” today.

I was raised by a classic, tough-loving Nigerian mother. There was no “gentle parenting” in our house—there was “do it right or do it again” parenting. There was discipline, there was respect, and there were very clear boundaries.

Now that I’m raising my own kids in 2026, I find myself in a tug-of-war. I want to be their friend, but I also want them to have that “Home Sense” and resilience my mother gave me.

Sometimes I wonder: Are we being too soft today? Or was the “old school” way too tough?

I’ve realized that my mom’s discipline was her love language. She didn’t have the words to say “I want you to be strong,” so she showed me by making me work for what I wanted.
