Renaissance Energy targets 300,000 bpd oil production by January

Renaissance Africa Energy Company Ltd. says it is on track to hit a production target of 300,000 barrels per day (bpd) by January 2026, following recent operational gains and facility upgrades.

Dr Mesh Maichibi, Chief Production Officer at Renaissance, disclosed this on Friday at a two-day 20th Annual Lecture and Award Ceremony of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Port Harcourt Branch.

Delivering a lecture on “Transition Management: The Renaissance Case Study,” Maichibi highlighted the company’s rapid progress since acquiring assets from Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) in March.

He stated that Renaissance currently produced about 230,000 bpd and was preparing to activate three additional facilities before the end of the year to meet its target.

“At the point of acquisition in March, production stood at 100,000 bpd. Currently, we are producing 230,000 bpd, and we are confident of reaching 300,000 bpd by January 2026.

“We have a solid strategy to achieve this target. We know the crude locations, understand the challenges, and are implementing the right mechanisms to deliver results,” Maichibi said.

He identified Belama flow station as one of the company’s high-capacity assets, capable of producing 25,000 bpd, noting that restarting such facilities alongside other wells would significantly boost output.

Maichibi said that Renaissance had increased production by more than 100 per cent within months of taking over operations, and was addressing sectoral challenges, including disruptions by non-state actors.

According to him, the company is positioning itself to become Africa’s largest energy firm.

“Change should be embraced. As we move forward, we must constantly evaluate our actions and adjust to ensure we are doing the right thing,” he said.

The chief production officer also underlined the company’s commitment to capacity building and local content development.

“Eighty per cent of our operations are executed by contractors, whom we now refer to as partners.

“We are investing in their development and training young graduates to take over leadership roles in the future,” he said.

Maichibi noted that Nigeria’s vast crude oil reserves demanded long-term planning and skilled manpower, hence the need to groom the next generation of energy professionals.

Earlier, Mrs Idaeresoari Ateke, Chairman of the NSE Port Harcourt Branch, reaffirmed the union’s commitment to professional excellence and mentorship.

She said the annual lecture and awards remained a cornerstone of the branch’s calendar, honouring outstanding contributions to engineering while fostering intergenerational knowledge transfer.

The ceremony featured keynote presentations, award recognitions, and tributes to past leaders of the branch.

Court remands 50-year-old woman for allegedly exhuming female co**se

An Osun Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife on Friday remanded a 50-year-old woman, Kudirat Kareem for allegedly exhuming a woman’s co**se.

The defendant, of no fixed address, is facing a four-count charge bothering on conspiracy, breach of peace and felony.

The prosecutor, Insp Adesina Elijah told the court that the defendant committed the offences on Aug. 17, 2025 around 10:00a.m at Olugbodo Layout, Ondo Road, Ile-Ife, Osun.

He added that the defendant unlawfully exhumed the co**se of Adeoti Olagunju and took it to an unknown place without the knowledge of the deceased’s son, Adebola Sowole.

Elijah said the act caused psychological trauma to the complainant, Sowole.

He alleged that the defendant also sold an uncompleted building belonging to the deceased without the consent of the complainant.

The prosecutor explained that the unlawful act breached the trust that the late woman had in the defendant.

He stated that the offences contravened Section 4 of the Osun State Violent against persons prohibited Laws, 2021 and 434 and 516, Law of Osun, 2002.

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The defence counsel, Mr Martins Awe applied for the defendant’s bail in most liberal terms, with a pledge that she would not jump bail.

Magistrate Kikelomo Adebayo did not grant bail to the defendant, directing her counsel to apply through formal application.

Adebayo, therefore, ordered that the defendant be remanded in Ilesa Correctional Centre pending the consideration of her bail application.

She adjourned the case until Sept 9, for mention. (NAN)

Diesel price averaged N1,789.45 per litre in July – NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) says the average retail price of a litre of diesel decreased from N1,813.81 in June 2025 to N1,789.45 in July.

The NBS said this in its Diesel Price Watch for July released in Abuja on Friday.

The report said that the July price of N1,789.45 per litre amounted to a 1.34 per cent decrease over the N1,813.81 paid in June.

“On a year-on-year basis, the price increased by 29.72 per cent from the N1,379.48 per litre recorded in July 2024,” it said.

On state profile analysis, the report said that the highest average price of diesel in July was recorded in Benue at N2,341.46 per litre, followed by Adamawa at N2,163.88 and Plateau at N2,029.71.

NEMA clarifies roles of states, LGs in disaster response

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has reiterated the need for coordinated disaster response across federal, state, and local government levels.

Mr Eric Ebhodaghe, South-South Zonal Coordinator of NEMA, made the clarification in an interview with newsmen in Port Harcourt on Friday.

He expressed concerns over the operational framework for disaster management in the country, urging states and local governments to strengthen their emergency structures.

According to him, NEMA serves as the federal coordinating body mandated to oversee disaster preparedness and response nationwide.

Ebhodaghe explained that effective disaster management required active participation from State Emergency Management Agencies (SEMAs) and Local Government Emergency Management Committees (LGEMCs).

“SEMA is expected to replicate NEMA’s functions at the state level, while LGEMCs are to mirror SEMA’s efforts within communities.

“In essence, when NEMA introduces mitigation measures for a disaster, states are expected to implement them” he said.

Ebhodaghe stressed that disaster response should begin at the local level, with LGEMCs serving as first responders, supported by SEMA at the state level, and NEMA stepping in when states were overwhelmed.

According to him, it is unfortunate that some states do not understand the modus operandi of disaster management in Nigeria.

“Some do not have properly established SEMAs and rely solely on NEMA for interventions,” he said.

He added that disaster management was multi-sectoral and could not be left for NEMA alone, but noted that states could not effectively manage disasters through agencies that lacked legal backing.

He further said that some states were neglecting their own responsibilities and yet expected NEMA to intervene at both state and local levels.

Ebhodaghe, therefore, called on state governments to establish and empower SEMAs in line with statutory provisions, stressing that disaster management remains a joint effort.

Police condemn killing of woman mislabelled kidnapper in Ilorin

The Police command in Kwara has condemned the jungle justice inflicted on a female destitute wrongly suspected of being a kidnapper at Ipata market, Ilorin.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, in Ilorin on Thursday.

The incident occurred at the popular Ipata market on Thursday around 9:00 a.m.

According to the Ejire-Adeyemi, a destitute woman was seen wandering and was wrongly suspected of being a kidnapper by misinformed members of the public.

In response, an angry mob attacked her, inflicting severe injuries.

Police patrol teams swiftly mobilised, rescued the victim, and rushed her to the General Hospital, Ilorin, for emergency treatment.

Sadly, the attending doctor confirmed her death from the injuries sustained.

Her remains have been deposited in the hospital mortuary, while discreet investigations are ongoing.

The command strongly condemned the act of jungle justice, stressing that it undermines the rule of law and endangers innocent lives.

Ejire-Adeyemi noted that mob action does not resolve security challenges but worsens insecurity and erodes public safety.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, urged citizens to remain calm, law-abiding, and report suspicious persons or movements to the nearest police station.

He appealed to residents of Kwara to work with the Police in promoting law, order, and justice, while firmly rejecting mob violence.

Navy handover rice, PMS, cannabis, victims of human trafficking to relevant agencies

(NAN) The Nigerian Navy has intercepted 823 bags of smuggled foreign rice, 50 wraps of ma*****na and rescued eight victims of human trafficking in Badagry, Lagos State.

Navy Capt. Leye Omotayo, the Commanding Officer, Federal Operating Base (FOB), Badagry disclosed this during handing over ceremony to different federal agencies at the base in Badagry on Thursday.

Omotayo, represented at the event by the Base Executive Officer (BEO), Cdr Shuaibu Yakubu, said that the interception of the contraband items and rescue of the victims took place between July 18 and Aug. 20.

“In line with the Nigerian Navy’s sustained mandate to curb smuggling, trafficking, and other cross-border crimes within its Area of Operations (AOO), the base intensified patrols and enforcement activities with remarkable success.

“During this period, the Base conducted a series of targeted operations across Badagry-Porto Novo Creek, Tongeji axis, Akoro Beach, Owode-Apa, Gbaji, Iyafin, and adjoining waterways.

“These operations led to the interception of petroleum products, foreign parboiled rice, cannabis sativa, and the rescue of victims of human trafficking.

“Between July 29 and Aug 2, the Base carried out coordinated patrols along Tongeji Creek, Moba Waterside, and Badagry-Porto Novo Creek, which resulted in the seizure of 823 bags of foreign parboiled rice.

“The bags, concealed in boats and other covert channels for onward distribution into Badagry and nearby communities, were part of a major smuggling network disrupted by the Nigerian Navy along the Nigeria- Benin maritime corridor,” he said.

Omotayo said the base
anti-smuggling operations within the same timeframe led to the confiscation of about 13,965 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) known as petrol.

“These seizures were recorded at Owode-Apa, Ashikpa, Badagry-Porto Novo Creek, Akoro Beach, and Tongeji axis.
“Intelligence revealed that the consignments were intended for illegal movement into Benin Republic.

“The entire contaminated PMS was subsequently destroyed to avoid recirculation into the local market in line with extant regulation,” he said.

The CO also said that between July 23 and Aug. 8, the Base recorded significant success in countering human trafficking along Badagry-Porto Novo River.

“In the course of these operations, eight victims were rescued while two traffickers arrested.

“Investigations revealed that the victims were being deceived with promises of better opportunities in neighbouring countries, with the intent of exploiting them to forced labour and prostitution.

“Notably, Mr Godwin Ifeanyi, a prime facilitator of the syndicate, was arrested and has since been charged to court.

“All rescued victims were profiled and handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and the reunification with their families,” he said.

Omotayo further said that on July 25, acting on credible intelligence, naval personnel conducted a targeted raid on a suspected drug storage facility at Jegeme axis.

“The operation led to the recovery of 50 wraps of cannabis sativa, carefully concealed for onward distribution.

“The swift action not only disrupted the illicit drug supply chain but also reaffirmed the Nigerian Navy’s determination to prevent criminal elements from exploiting border communities as transit points for narcotics trafficking.

“Today, in line with the Nigerian Navy’s Standard Operating Procedures and in keeping with extant regulations, the entire consignment of 823 bags of rice have been formally handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service Seme Area Command.

“Also, 50 wraps suspected cannabis sativa was transferred to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Seme Area Command, for further administrative action.

“These sustained efforts underscore the vision of the Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, as articulated in the CNS Strategic Directive 06-2023.

“The directive emphasizes the NN’s role in safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime borders, countering economic sabotage, combating transnational crimes, and strengthening inter-agency cooperation to enhance national security.

“FOB remains committed to executing its mandate with professionalism, diligence, and resolve, while working closely with host communities and sister security agencies in the collective fight against smuggling, trafficking, and other maritime crimes,” he said.

Receiving the exhibit, Mr Emmanuel Ogbogoh, Deputy Commander of Narcotics, Seme Special Command of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) promised that an investigation would begin on the seized items.

Ogbogoh commended the Nigerian Navy for the seizures, assuring them that the perpetrators would not go unpunished.

Also, receiving the smuggled bags of foreign rice, Deputy Comptroller of Customs in Enforcement, Mr A .O Egunjobi, Seme Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service, commended the Nigerian Navy for ensuring safety and security on the waterways.

Mbah unveils renovated Hotel Presidential abandoned two decades ago

Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State, on Thursday, inaugurated the newly renovated Hotel Presidential, Enugu aimed at boosting the economy of the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the hotel was built and inaugurated by Dr Michael Okpara, the premier of Eastern Nigeria in 1963 and was abandoned for over two decades.

NAN reports that Gov Mbah, on assumption of office, renovated and upgraded the hotel.

Unveiling the hotel, Mbah, who described the event as homecoming for history, recalled that over decades the hotel had been neglected.

He said, “62 years ago, our forebears, under the visionary leadership
of Dr Michael Okpara, built this landmark as a symbol of Eastern region’s resilience, elegance and enterprise.

“Over the decades, time and neglect deemed its light. For about 15 years, this glorious edifice stood as an affront to our pride and something contrary to what we represent”.

The governor said that when they came into office, his administration made a strong pledge to recover and revive those moribund assets belonging to Enugu people.

This, he said, was to make Enugu, the preferred destination for investment, tourism, living, and leisure.

“We made a deliberate decision to convert dormant assets into productive assets, turn liabilities into engines of growth and the standards for this hotel’s revamp were truly world-class.

“That is why this unveiling is more than opening the doors of a hotel but reopening of Enugu’s confidence,” the governor added.

Mbah also described the hotel as strategic enabler of the state’s growth plan, comprising the ambitious targets to grow Enugu’s economy to, at least, $30 billion dollars and achieve zero poverty headcount rate.

He explained that the hotel now met the expectation of today’s travelers with modern rooms, suites and efficient lifts as well as safety systems.

Others were contemporary conference halls, event spaces, improved culinary, reliable power, water and digital comfort.

He commended managers and the concessionaires and Amber Hospitality for believing in Enugu’s potential as well as the contractors for their attention to details.

“Our gratitude also goes to the Commisioners for Works
and Infrastructure, Mr Gerald Otiji, and Culture and Tourism, Dame Ugochi Madueke.

Also speaking, Madueke while hailing the rebirth of the hotel, said for years, the edifice’s glory faded as a result of poor management and neglect.

“The hotel stood abandoned, a painful shadow of itself. When Hotel Presidential fell silent, something in Enugu people felt silent too.

Many of us passed by with heavy hearts, remembering the laughter that once echoed in its home but Mbah came and changed the narrative.

“Today’s resurrection is a proof that what was lost can be restored,” she said.

Earlier, the Enugu North Council Chairman, Mr Ibenaku Onoh, said the celebration was not just about the brick and mortar or the modern finishing of the hotel but the restoration of the historic place.

He thanked Mbah for the numerous projects he had been citing in the Area.
