Former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo has accused judges of widespread corruption and warned that the system has become a "court of corruption rather than a court of justice." In his new book, Nigeria: Past and Future, published by the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Obasanjo laments the decline of judicial integrity since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, known as the Fourth Republic. He warns that justice in the country has become commodified, with despair, anarchy, and violence replacing justice, order, and hope. Obasanjo also accused the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, of compromising the electoral process since 2015, when he took office. He claimed Yakubu has “polluted and grossly undermined” elections, turning them into a “charade” that robs citizens of their will.
