**JUST IN: Fire Engulfs Several Shops at Popular Alaba International Market in Lagos**

A late-night fire has reportedly broken out at the famous **Alaba International Market** in Lagos State, destroying several shops and goods worth millions of naira.

The incident, which occurred on **Wednesday night**, sent panic across the market area as traders and residents struggled to salvage their goods from the raging flames.

Eyewitnesses said the fire started in one of the electronics sections of the market before spreading rapidly to nearby shops. The exact cause of the blaze remains unknown as of press time.

Firefighters from the **Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service** have reportedly arrived at the scene and are working to bring the situation under control. However, the dense layout of the market and the late hour have made firefighting efforts difficult.

Many traders were seen wailing helplessly as their shops and goods went up in flames, with some blaming poor access roads and inadequate fire safety measures for the rapid spread of the fire.

Enugu Governor Denies Tax Hike, Sets Up Committee to Review Allegations

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has denied claims that his administration raised taxes, saying the state only widened the tax net and introduced e-payment systems to block revenue leakages.

Speaking at the Government House, Mbah said false narratives about taxation are being spread by those who profited from the old corrupt system. He announced the formation of a committee—including market unions, civil society groups, and NGOs—to review tax practices and make recommendations.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to phase out temporary driver’s licences following the upgrade of its printing facility, which now produces up to 15,000 permanent licences daily.

According to the agency, this improvement will help clear all pending backlogs before the second week of November 2025. The FRSC also revealed ongoing efforts to adopt contactless biometric capture and instant licence printing to make the process faster and more efficient nationwide.
