I was sent this information earlier today, and, as I usually do with reports of this nature, I reached out to my sources to establish what actually happened.

The development from Matazu Local Government Area of Katsina State is encouraging.

Troops operating in the area reportedly neutralised two high-profile members of a notorious terrorist network: Hamisu, alias Mamiyo, and Umar Bocho, both described as senior commanders within the group.

The principal commander, Kachalla Muhammadu Filani, was also reportedly engaged during the operation but escaped with severe gunshot wounds.

I commend the courage and sacrifice of our security forces and hope this operation is followed by sustained intelligence-led action to dismantle the entire network.

The objective should not simply be to eliminate individual commanders. It should be to dismantle the criminal structures that allow them to recruit, operate and terrorise communities.

That is how we restore confidence in the Nigerian state and, ultimately, return peace to the people.
