President Jomo Kenyatta passed away in his sleep on 22 August 1978 while on official duty in Mombasa. Following his death, his body was transported to Nairobi, where it lay in state at State House for public viewing and for dignitaries to pay their final respects.

His passing marked the end of Kenya's first presidential era. Long-serving Vice President Daniel arap Moi was sworn in as Acting President before later becoming Kenya's second President, a position he held for the next 24 years.
