Artists, authors, philosophers, and scientists have long been fascinated by dreams. Aristotle wrote about them, Shakespeare referenced them in “Hamlet,” and today we still wonder what dreams mean and why we have them. Almost everyone dreams, even if they don’t remember doing so.
So why do we dream? The truth is, scientists don’t fully know. But we do know certain things about how dreams work and how long they last.
How long do dreams last?
It’s hard to pinpoint the exact length of a single dream. However, most people dream four to six times each night. The National Institutes of Health estimates we may spend up to 2 hours dreaming during a full night’s sleep.
How long does REM sleep last?
Most vivid dreams happen during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. Your brain enters REM about 90 minutes after falling asleep, but the first REM cycle may last only a few minutes. Later cycles gradually lengthen, sometimes lasting up to 30 minutes. Over an 8-hour sleep period, REM accounts for about one-quarter of total sleep.
How long do nightmares last?
Nightmares generally happen during later REM cycles, often in the last third of the night. While the exact length is unclear, we know:
50–85% of adults report having nightmares.
Women report nightmares more often than men.
Stress, anxiety, medications, and trauma can trigger nightmares.
Nightmare disorder affects about 4% of adults.
Up to 71% of trauma survivors experience frequent nightmares.
Treatments such as image rehearsal therapy and cognitive behavioral therapy can help.
How many dreams do we have per night?
It’s nearly impossible to count all dreams, especially because many are forgotten. Older research suggests dream frequency may correspond to the amount of time spent in REM sleep.
Other fun facts about dreams
Kids dream mostly in NREM sleep. For children under 10, REM accounts for only about 20% of their dream time.
Your body is paralyzed during REM sleep. This temporary paralysis prevents you from acting out dreams.
Some people act out dreams. REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) causes movement during dreaming.
Your brain may choose what to forget. Research suggests certain neurons suppress memory-making during REM.
Medications can influence dreams. For example, beta-blockers may intensify dream vividness.
Some people dream in black and white. Older adults exposed to black-and-white TV may dream in grayscale more often.
