🚨 DIPHTHERIA AWARENESS: WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW
Diphtheria is a serious and potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that can affect the nose and throat. It is caused by certain strains of Corynebacterium diphtheriae, which can produce a harmful toxin.
One of the characteristic signs of diphtheria is a thick gray or white coating (pseudomembrane) in the throat or nose. This can make breathing and swallowing difficult.
🦠 HOW DOES DIPHTHERIA SPREAD?
Diphtheria can spread from person to person through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Close contact with infected secretions can also spread the infection.
⚠️ WHAT ARE THE WARNING SIGNS?
Symptoms can include: • Sore throat
• Fever
• Weakness and tiredness
• Swollen glands in the neck
• Difficulty swallowing
• Difficulty breathing
• A thick gray/white membrane in the throat or nose
The infection can become dangerous because its toxin may damage organs such as the heart and nervous system.
💉 CAN DIPHTHERIA BE PREVENTED?
Yes. Vaccination is the most important way to prevent diphtheria.
Diphtheria-containing vaccines are included in routine childhood immunization schedules. Keeping children up to date with their recommended vaccines helps protect them and also reduces the spread of the disease.
🏥 WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Do not ignore symptoms such as severe sore throat, neck swelling, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing—particularly in an unvaccinated or incompletely vaccinated person.
Seek medical attention immediately if diphtheria is suspected. Treatment may include diphtheria antitoxin and appropriate antibiotics, and close contacts may also need medical assessment.
📌 Remember: Diphtheria is preventable, but early recognition and treatment are extremely important.
