NẸ̀ MGBẸ́ ND'ISHI
There were a people usually referred to as the "Ìshì" people in Nsukka. The word Ìshì is often used to refer to the early people who founded the various ancient republics of Nsukka. They were believed to have the secret knowledge of the land. This is why when referring to their time, our people would say "Nẹ mgbẹ́ Nd'ìshì." The eldest male of any village in Nsukka is called "Onye-ìshì." It should be noted that "Onye-ìshì" is a singular version of "Nd'ishi" which is plural.

Going to the history lane, Professor Shelton in his "Igbo-Igala Borderland" has noted that the Nri people of Anambra were called the people of "Nshi" by the aboriginal Nsukka. There is the story of Ezeọ̀kpaka nwa Eze Nshị in Eha-Alumona today who was believed to have migrated from Nshi (Nri) in Anambra. That particular village of Ezeọ̀kpaka traces their lineage to Nshi.

Follow me further. In Nsukka town of Ishi Aya Nategna, Ezeoguda is considered the eldest village just as Ụmụezeke is considered the oldest village in Ọbụkpa. The Nsukka version of the story is that the Nshi (Nri) people were sought far and wide (probably because of their spiritual mysticism) in those days of yore for the institution of the title system that would governed the newly founded republics. This was because, in order to survive from the incessant slave raiding, different villages were coming together to form a village group. This is what led to the formation of such village groups as Ọbụkpa, Ovoko, Eha-Alumona, Nsukka and so on.

For the story of Nsukka, it's said that when the people of Nri came and the different villages (or kindreds) had gathered, the people of Nri demanded for Kolanut and that they would not do anything unless a Kolanut was presented with which they would be use for the opening prayer, ị́gọ́ ọfọ. They said if the Kolanut was not presented, they would not do anything. It was said that there was no Kolanut and the whole ceremony was at the verge of collapsing until a particular man from Ezeoguda was able to provide kolanut from his bag. For this reason, according to the story, the Nri people pronounced the Ezeoguda people the eldest. It was a position "vested" on them by these Nshi people and not that they were actually the eldest. Then, the people of Nshi instituted the Eze title for them and then shared other functions for other villages. This was what was also said of Ọbụkpa but Ọbụkpa's story is silent on who demanded for kolanut and subsequently made Ụmụezeke the eldest. Recall that there's a village called Ụmụezeke in Adaba, Ụzọ-Ụ́wánị̀ Local Government Area of Enugu State.

During the Onunu ceremony of the Nsukka people, the festival culminates with the sending of a parcel of meat to the Nshi people in the faraway land.

The word Ìshì is used as these people of the knowledgeable past who did things accurately as it should be done. This is why if an elder wants to validate a practice or a decision in Nsukka, he would say "Ya bụ kẹ eshi eme ye nẹ mgbẹ́ Nd'ishi (this is house it was done in the time of ìshì people). Subsequently, Nd'ishi is now used to refer to our ancestors, the earliest of our forefathers who founded each of our republics.

However, why the word "Ìshì?" My question is: Can it be said that ìshì is a corruption of Nshi which was a term used to refer to the Nri people by our forefathers?

36 Years After, NFF Approves Tournament in Sam Okwaraji's Honour
..As Nigeria youths laud Izunaso, Anyansi, Siasia's strong support for tournament.

The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has finally given its approval and endorsement of the annual Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship.

The tournament which has already received the endorsement of the Senator Abdul Ningi led Senate Committee on Sports Developments
Is an initiative of the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation.

It is being organized to immortalize the late Imo-born Nigerian international who slumped and died at National Stadium Surulere, Lagos in August 1989, during a crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Angola and return grassroot football development in the country. The maiden edition kicks off later this year.

Educated at an Italian University in Rome, Late Okwaraji"s commitment to the Nigeria national team symbolizes a true spirit of patriotism on the part of a Nigerian youth who prioritized service to his country above personal gains. His exemplary conduct and service to the Super Eagles (then known as the Green Eagles) will continue to remain a model for the Nigerian youth even in more decades to come.

The NFF in a letter signed by Ruth David on behalf of the Acting Director, Competitions, and addressed to the Sam Okwaraji Foundation, said its endorsement of the tournament was in recognition of the objectives and goals of the championship which would not only impact positively on the youths who are the participants, but also the development of football in the country.

NFF also appreciated the desire of the organizers to use the championship to contribute to the growth and development of youth football in the country with all the benefits accruing from such a competition.

NFF therefore advised the organisers to stick to the extant rules of Football which it is the governing authority.
Meanwhile the Coalition of Nigeria Youth Leaders (CONYL) has applauded Senator Osita Izunaso representing Imo West senatorial district (Orlu Zone) where the late Sam Okwaraji hailed from, for his strong support for the planned national tournament.

The group also hailed the NFF for approving and endorsing the tournament. They also lauded the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Football Federation Chief Felix Anyansi for his role in ensuring the approval of the tournament and commitment to ensuring it’s success, describing him as a competent football administrator.

The youth leaders, who called on corporate organizations to support the initiative, commended the Nigeria Football Federation under the Ibrahim Gusau presidency for their foresight in approving the prestigious tournament.

In a release signed by Comrade Goodluck Ibem, Comrade AdeyemoAdewale, Comrade JunaidAbubakar, Comrade Iniobong, President- General, Publicity Secretary, Secretary and Provost respectively, the group highlighted the imperative to immortalise the football legend, saying: "Sam Okwaraji was an uncommon patriot who deserves to be so immortalized, but beyond that, Nigeria needs a return to such grassroot soccer programs that we used to have in the past."

The group called on SouthEast leaders especially, the political leaders to ensure the success of the tournament, notwithstanding the fact that the tournament is a pan-Nigeria football competition.

"It behoves more on political leaders from the South East led by the governors to ensure its success as it will resonate positively with youths from that zone...," the group added.
The youth leaders called on the National Sports Commission and President Bola Tinubu to make it a national event since football has proved to be a strong uniting factor in Nigeria, aside being a multi-billion dollar venture globally.

"Ex-International, Samson Siasia who coincidentally was Okwaraji 's team mate and the last person to speak with the late footballer before breathing his last, is another wonderful Nigerian whom we learnt, has been working round the clock to ensure the success of the tournament and we commend him for his effort…,” the youth leaders concluded.

Contrary to the false propagation that this Igbo "hat" is a white man's winter cap, a narrative falsely spread by mischievous elements. Now to put the records straight, this hat is originally weaved in Igbo Land along side the Akwete Igbo traditional clothing fabrics in the NDOKI part of Igbo land.
The Okpu Agu, also known as the "African knitted striped hat," is as old as the Igbo race, it's rich history dates back to the ealy Igbo ancestors who settled in Africa even before 1000 BCE.
It symbolizes the strength of the Igbo race and called OKPU AGU in almost all Igbo dialects and extractions with "Agu" (leopard ) symbolizing the strength and fearlessness of the Igbo people.

On the other hand, the Akwete fabric was named after a town called "AKWETE" which is the headquarters of Ukwa East local government area of Abia state, Nigeria. Akwete is located 18 Kilometers northeast of the of Port Harcourt and 18 Kilometers southeast of the commercial city of Aba.

These were all produced in Igbo Land and never from the white man.
