How Breastfeeding Can Prevent Pregnancy
When a mother breastfeeds frequently, her body produces high levels of a hormone called prolactin. Prolactin stimulates milk production and can suppress the release of hormones needed for ovulation (the release of an egg from the o***y).
Without ovulation, pregnancy cannot occur because there is no egg available for fertilization.
This Method Is Called Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM)
LAM can be up to 98% effective if all three of these conditions are met:
Your baby is less than 6 months old.
You have not resumed your menstrual periods.
You are exclusively or nearly exclusively breastfeeding (day and night, with very few or no formula feeds).
Why Breastfeeding Sometimes Fails to Prevent Pregnancy
Breastfeeding may not prevent pregnancy if:
The baby is older than 6 months.
The mother starts menstruating again.
Breastfeeding becomes less frequent.
The baby sleeps longer at night without feeding.
Formula, water, or solid foods are introduced regularly.
A woman can ovulate before her first period returns, meaning she can become pregnant without realizing her fertility has returned.
Signs Fertility May Be Returning
Return of menstrual periods.
Reduced breastfeeding frequency.
Changes in cervical mucus.
Baby starts eating more solid foods.
Advantages of LAM
✔ No cost.
✔ No medication required.
✔ Supports bonding between mother and baby.
✔ Encourages exclusive breastfeeding.
Disadvantages of LAM
✖ Only reliable for the first 6 months after birth.
✖ Requires frequent breastfeeding.
✖ Does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
✖ Pregnancy can occur if any of the LAM conditions are no longer met.
Example
A mother with a 3-month-old baby who breastfeeds exclusively day and night and has not seen her menstrual period since delivery has a very low chance of becoming pregnant.
However, if her baby is 8 months old and has started eating solid foods, breastfeeding alone should not be relied upon to prevent pregnancy.

Widal test is a laboratory blood test used to help detect typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi. It checks for antibodies your body produces against the bacteria. Doctors may recommend this test when a person has symptoms like high fever, weakness, stomach pain, headache, and loss of appetite.
If typhoid fever is not treated on time, it can lead to serious complications such as severe dehydration, internal bleeding, intestinal damage, weakness, and even death in severe cases. Early diagnosis and proper treatment are very important to prevent complications.
Good hygiene, clean water, and proper food handling can help reduce the risk of typhoid infection. Have you ever done a Widal test before?
