Nigerian Govt. Declares Wednesday Public Holiday Worker's Day

The federal government has declared Wednesday, 1 May, a public holiday in commemoration of the 2024 Workers’ Day Celebration.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Interior, Aishetu Ndayako, on Tuesday 30 April 2024 in Abuja.

She stated that the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, made the declaration on behalf of the federal government.

Mr Tunji-Ojo reemphasised the need for excellence, efficiency and equity in all spheres of labour while reaffirming President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to foster a culture of innovation, productivity and inclusivity in the workplace.

The minister said, “In alignment with this year’s theme, which focuses on ensuring safety and health at work in a changing climate, I wish to state that the federal government remained steadfast in its resolve to prioritise the safety and well-being of all citizens.

“Let me reaffirm the president’s commitment to provide a conducive environment for work, where every worker can thrive and contribute meaningfully to national development.”

While highlighting the contribution of workers, he called for proactive measures to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change through synergy in the implementation of sustainable practices.

He also acknowledged policies that promote well-being in the workplace and in building a nation guided by the principles of integrity, diligence and compassion.

The minister also urged Nigerians to remain committed to the present administration’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” and wished workers a happy celebration.

Inclusiveness!

There is absolutely nowhere women can achieve long-lasting if we don't embrace diversity.

We must come together irrespective of who we are, our general worldview and where we are coming from/going to build one another.

Women must aspire to embrace inclusiveness even in our diverse worlds and just as the theme says "Inspire Inclusion", we must first and foremost celebrate one another like never before, that way, motivating ourselves becomes a done deal.

The truth is, we cannot successfully inspire inclusion without taking cognizance of our unique variety such as age, ethnicity, gender, physical abilities/qualities, race, sexual orientation, educational or family background, religion, geographical location, and/or work experiences. These and more should not put a barrier on us coming together and fostering the change, justice and equality we so desire.

I know you will say these things are easier said than done. I feel your sentiment but Rome they say was not built in a day.

The great future we all aspire to where equal opportunities are given to women starts from you and me inspiring one another to aim higher in all aspects of life, in society and making conscious efforts to be a part of governance across different sectors.

We must applaud ourselves globally for the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. And each year, like today should forever serve as a powerful reminder of the progress made so far towards gender equality while underlining the work that lies ahead.

We must rise above the second place - the kitchen and 'za-oda room'😊 to promote diversity and inclusiveness in leadership and decision-making positions.

Women should never face barriers when seeking leadership roles. We must rise for one another across different strata of life while calling out our underperformances.

By the way, just to crack you up a bit.😊

I find the meaning of women by dictionary.com quite hilarious.

"Suitable for use as food; edible. in excess of the normal or average. splendid; magnificent; fine."

Does it mean women are mainly supposed to be eaten as food...?
By who 'kwanu'?🤷‍♀️😁

World Cancer Day!

As nations globally mark this year’s World Cancer Day, the global health body – the World Health Organisation (WHO) – has released troubling statistics about the disease.

WHO, in a statement, said the number of new cancer cases globally will reach 35 million by 2050, 77 per cent higher than the figure in 2022, noting that there were an estimated 20 million new cancer cases and 9.7 million deaths in 2022.

The First Lady, in Nigeria, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has advocated increased awareness campaigns against cancer.

NAFDAC speaks on report of alleged under-dosed paracetamol

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says the recent publication claiming that paracetamol drugs in Nigeria are under-dosed is fake.

“There is nothing wrong with our paracetamol. The publication is fake and I’m speaking from the perspective of a professor,” Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General of NAFDAC, said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

Mrs Adeyeye said that the publication was a disservice to Nigeria, adding that academic publications need to be more responsive to issues of public health.

A 2023 study with samples from five paracetamol brands claiming to contain 500mg paracetamol as its active ingredient was said to have been tested and analysed using the spectrophotometric method.

But the paracetamol concentrations were reportedly found to range from 185mg to 358mg, which is less than the recommended 500mg.

The study’s researchers raised concerns about the possibility of treatment failure due to under-dosed paracetamol tablets.

Mrs Adeyeye, however, said that findings have shown that the said publication has been retracted.

The NAFDAC boss, who cautioned against playing on the intelligence of Nigerians, enjoined all Nigerians to use paracetamol.
