⚡️Cherotich takes leap of faith!

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich upstaged world and Olympic champion Winfred Yavi to win the women’s 3000m steeplechase.

The 21-year-old, already a two-time global bronze medallist, tracked Yavi for most of the race, but started to kick with half a lap to go. Flying over the final water jump, she propelled herself into the lead.

Cherotich sprinted away to win in a championship record of 8:51.59, finishing almost five seconds clear of Yavi (8:56.46).

Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew took bronze in a PB of 8:58.86.

Kenya’s Faith Cherotich upstaged world and Olympic champion Winfred Yavi to win the women's 3000m steeplechase.

Kipyegon defends title at World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 with a display of pure dominance.

Faith Kipyegon maintained her reign in the women’s 1500m, winning her fourth consecutive world title at the distance.

The three-time Olympic champion from Kenya clocked 3:52.15 to add another title to her sensational CV, finishing well clear ahead of her compatriot Dorcus Ewoi, who ran a 3:54.92 PB to secure silver, and Australia’s Jess Hull, who got bronze in 3:55.16.

Kipyegon becomes only the second woman to win four world titles in the same track event after Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who has won five 100m titles.

Simbu secures Tanzania's first global gold to kick off third morning in Tokyo

Alphonce Felix Simbu pipped Amanal Petros by the narrowest of margins to kick off the third day of competition at the World Athletics Championships Tokyo 25 on Monday.

In winning by just three hundredths of a second – both athletes crossing the finish line in the Japan National Stadium in 2:09:48 but with Simbu a fraction ahead – the Tanzanian 33-year-old became his nation’s first ever global gold medallist.

He adds this world title to the world marathon bronze he claimed in London in 2017 and his runner-up finishes at the Boston Marathon earlier this year and the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Germany’s Petros had led as the race left the roads and entered the stadium, and he was still to the fore as they hit the final straight, but Simbu timed his kick to perfection.

They were followed over the finish line by Italy’s Iliass Aouani, bronze medallist in 2:09:53.
