STATEHOUSE PRESS RELEASE

PRESIDENT TINUBU SETS FIRST QUARTER 2026 TARGET FOR THE TAKE-OFF OF NATIONAL SINGLE WINDOW PROJECT‎

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the National Single Window (NSW) Steering Committee to ensure the platform becomes fully operational by the first quarter of 2026.‎

The directive was delivered during Tuesday's fifth steering committee meeting at the State House, Abuja.

The President was represented by his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.‎

Gbajabiamila said the recent Tax Reform Acts, signed into law in June, underscored the urgency of accelerating reforms and pursuing Nigeria's $1 trillion economy target.‎

He highlighted the importance of financial and trade reforms in achieving national economic transformation.‎

"It's important that we continue to stay focused on this project. So that at the end of the day, we meet our timelines and achieve the results the President expects.‎

"As you all are aware, the project is one of the transformative initiatives of Mr. President which we collectively must ensure is effectively and commendably implemented," Gbajabiamila said.‎
He emphasised the role of a unified electronic platform in simplifying Nigeria's import and export operations.‎

According to him, the NSW will boost investment and trade revenues, improve transparency, and strengthen Nigeria's global business credibility.‎

Gbajabiamila urged all agencies to refine their targets and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to meet the Phase 1 deadline.‎

"I do expect that since the last meeting of the steering committee which was held on the 8th April, 2025, all stakeholders have operated and actively progressed with all the required KPIs and set targets to ensure that we go live with phase 1 in Q1 2026 as was previously scheduled," he said.‎

Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun described the progress as encouraging but stressed the need for swift execution.‎

He urged a shift from strategy to concrete implementation, calling the project complex but transformational.‎

Edun urged the committee to improve collaboration and resolve final hurdles to meet the rollout timeline.‎

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment Jumoke Oduwole also charged the committee to work diligently and meet the Q1 2026 deadline without fail.

Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), thanked the President for consistently supporting the project.‎

"Thank you on behalf of the steering committee. We thank you for the relentless support that you have given to us."‎

"And to all my colleagues here, we can see that the reward for hard work is more work. When we started last month, it is now law; the single window is now in the law."‎

He asked committee members to stay focused on the mission ahead.‎

The Director of the National Single Window (NSW) Project, Tola Fakolade, gave a brief overview of the steering committee's progress toward implementing the project.

"All second quarter 2025 key project milestones have been successfully achieved. And the customisation of the Single window platform has commenced," he said.

He gave assurances that the committee would meet up with the timelines.

The National Single Window project is a Federal Government initiative to streamline trade processes by creating a centralised electronic platform for importers and exporters.

It is a digital trade facilitation platform expected to accelerate economic growth and facilitate cross-border transactions.‎

Launched in April 2024, the NSW seeks to consolidate all agencies involved in imports and exports onto a unified electronic portal.‎

It is expected to reduce trade costs, cut delays, and enhance transparency and efficiency at Nigerian ports.‎

Committee members include representatives from the Ministry of Trade and Investments, the Ministry of Finance, FIRS, and the Nigeria Customs Service.

Act, 2015.”

They each pleaded “guilty” to the charges preferred against them.

In view of their pleas, the prosecution counsel, A.A. Usman called on Muhammad Sani Nuhu, an operative of the EFCC, to review the facts of the matters.

Nuhu told the court that the defendants were arrested sometime in May, 2025, following credible intelligence received by the Commission on the activities of a syndicate of internet fraudsters operating in the Ipaja Command area of Lagos State.

According to him, “an iPhone 11 was recovered from Sodiq, while an IPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone Xr were recovered from Paul upon arrest.

"They were duly processed and the defendants volunteered their statements under words of caution.

“Investigations were conducted and forensic evidence was printed out from their phones.

“ Sodiq confessed that he was into modelling scam and that he had benefited the sum of $400 ( Four Hundred United States Dollars).

“ Osayande confessed he was into romance scam and that he had benefited the sum of $200(Two Hundred United States Dollars).”

He also told the court that Sodiq restituted the sum of N150,000 ( One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira), while Osayande restituted the sum of N100,000(One Hundred Thousand Naira) by tendering bank drafts.

Usman further sought to tender, in evidence, the defendants’ extrajudicial statements, iPhone 11 Pro Max and iPhone XR recovered from Osayande, the iPhone 11 recovered from Sodiq as well as the forensic investigation document printed out from both phones.

Justice Owoeye admitted them as exhibits.

Appeal Court Orders FRSC to Pay ABSU Lecturer ₦10 Million Over Illegal Seizure of Driver’s Licence

The Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri has awarded ₦10 million in damages to Emmanuel Shebbs Ugochukwu, a lecturer at Abia State University (ABSU), against the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for the unlawful seizure of his driver’s licence.

A three-man panel of the appellate court, presided over by Hon. Justice Amina Audi Wambai, ruled in favour of Dr. Ugochukwu, affirming that the actions of FRSC officers along Bende Road, Umuahia, were illegal, abusive, and violated his fundamental rights.

According to court documents and statements made by the lecturer, the incident occurred when FRSC personnel stopped him for a routine check. After verifying that all his documents and safety items including a spare tyre and fire extinguisher were in order, one of the officers allegedly solicited a bribe.

“I told them I was heading to the market and needed to withdraw cash from the ATM. I had no cash on me, so literally, I had no ‘something’ to give,” Dr. Ugochukwu recounted.

The situation quickly escalated. The officers conducted a second round of inspection and allegedly concocted new traffic offences, such as “worn-out tyre” or “no spare tyre.” His driver’s licence was seized, and a ₦3,000 fine was demanded.

Rather than pay or use his high-level connections to resolve the matter ,including reaching out to former students in government or law enforcement — Dr. Ugochukwu chose to seek justice through the courts.

“I remembered the many Nigerian youths who neither had connections nor ID cards , those who couldn’t afford to ‘pay their way out’ of an abusive law enforcement system,” he said.

Initially, the High Court had awarded ₦30 million in damages against the FRSC. However, the appellate court, while upholding the illegality of the FRSC’s actions, reduced the amount to ₦10 million in its unanimous judgment.

The ruling is being hailed by civil rights advocates as a landmark step toward holding law enforcement agencies accountable for abuse of power.

Northern Youth beg President Tinubu To Grant Presidential Amnesty To The Detained Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba kyari.

From Lateef Taiwo

A Coalition of Arewa Youths from the North East and North West has launched a passionate appeal to President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to grant
presidential amnesty to the detained Deputy Commissioner of Police Mr. Abba kyari.
In an open letter signed by Dan Arewa and Dr Sufi Abdullahi to President Tinubu, made available to newsmen in Abuja, on Sunday the group stated that the embattled detective still have a lot to contribute to nation building and National Security as we prepare for the 2027 elections

"With utmost respect and patriotic concern, I write to Your Excellency to express a sincere opinion regarding the political an̈d Security climate of the nation as we approach the next general election in 2027. As a concerned citizen with deep interest in national unity, National Security and political stability, I feel compelled to draw your attention to a matter that may significantly impact the perception and support of your leadership, especially in Northern Nigeria"

"Your Excellency, the continued detention of Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari has remained a subject of passionate discourse across the North. While we all recognize the importance of upholding the rule of law, justice must also be balanced with mercy, strategic foresight, and political wisdom. Many Northerners, especially youths and grassroots stakeholders, still hold Abba Kyari in high regard due to his past outstanding contributions to national security and his visible dedication in fighting crime."

'I strongly believe that granting clemency or facilitating a lawful, fair resolution to his case could serve as a powerful symbol of reconciliation, unity, and renewed trust. It will not only soften hardened hearts but also serve as a bridge to reconnect with a large section of the Northern electorate who currently feel overlooked or disillusioned"

The group while appealing for clemency noted that " There is growing sentiment that such a gesture from Your Excellency will be seen as a sign of strong leadership not weakness and it could change the political narrative in the North. Even those who may not have supported your first mandate may begin to see your presidency in a different light."

"Your Excellency, I share this with a strong sense of responsibility and without any intention to interfere in judicial processes. However, history often remembers great leaders not only for their policies but for their political intelligence and ability to unite a nation in moments of deep division"
