UNIJOS dental students pr0test against 10 years without graduation

Dozens of University of Jos dental students have taken to the streets to protest the non-accreditation of their courses, which has resulted in them spending over ten years in school without graduating.

The students, on Wednesday, blocked the university gate at its Permanent site, singing solidarity songs and carrying placards with different inscriptions which read, “Save us from unending depression,” “Our future is on hold,” “Accredit us now,” and “We are tired of UNIJOS,” among others.

The President of the Jos University Dental Students Association, Mr Johnson Titus, who spoke on behalf of the students, demanded that the management address their plight and provide a solution to their predicament.

“What you see behind me is the frustration of dental students who have been in the university for the past ten years without graduating. We have been stagnating because of the non-accreditation of our programme.

“The students are calling on the university management and relevant authorities to come forth and address their issues, which include getting a date for accreditation and resolving the curriculum problems,” Titus said

The student leader who blamed the university for their plight added, “Nobody should blame us because if the university is going to do screening and admission, they don’t usually inform students that there is no accreditation for the affected programme.

“The University of Jos did not inform anyone that there is no accreditation for the dental courses, for which they admitted us. If we had known, we probably wouldn’t have applied for the course.

"And also, if the university knew that there is no accreditation, why would they put Dentistry on their website for students to apply for admission. We feel the university is still at fault for the situation we have found ourselves.”

Another student, Nwike Pius, expressed frustration over the university’s lack of sincerity in handling the matter, saying, “The school has not been sincere with us because we hear a different story from them, and when we confirm, we hear a different story from the Council.

“The students have tried to reach out to the Vice Chancellor, but their efforts have been met with silence.”

However, the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Chris Piwuna, was not available when contacted on the issue, but a source close to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Tanko Ishaya, who spoke anonymously because he was not authorised to speak said that the university management was doing everything possible to address the matter.

He stated that the university had opened bidding for N800m capital projects, including the purchase of equipment for the dental programme, and that the Provost and senior faculty members met with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to get a date for accreditation

“I don’t know why the students chose this day to protest because the university management is doing something to address their issue.

“I know their matter has lingered, but as I’m talking with you, the university has opened bidding for N800m capital projects, including the purchase of their equipment.

The bid was opened just last week. On the issue of accreditation, just last week, the Provost and senior people in the faculty met with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to get a date for the accreditation of their programme. What else do they want?” the source said.

The students, however, remain resolute, saying they won’t vacate the university gate until their demands are met.

Ex-presidential chief of staff Abdullahi Mohammed d!es at 86

Major General Abdullahi Mohammed (retd.), a former Chief of Staff to ex-Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Umaru Yar’Adua, is d3ad.

Mohammed, who hailed from Ilorin, Kwara State, reportedly d!ed around 1 a.m. on Wednesday in Abuja at the age of 86.

Family sources confirmed the development to The PUNCH in Ilorin, describing his passing as a huge loss to the Ilorin Emirate, the nation, and the military community.

Born in 1939, the late General Mohammed attended the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, United Kingdom, and was commissioned into the Nigerian Army in 1958.

He rose through the ranks to become the Director of Military Intelligence and played a key role in the 1975 coup that toppled General Yakubu Gowon and brought General Murtala Mohammed to power.

Following the change of government, Mohammed was appointed Governor of Benue-Plateau State, serving from July 1975 to March 1976.

Under General Olusegun Obasanjo’s military administration, he became the Director-General of the National Security Organisation (NSO)—the precursor to today’s Department of State Services (DSS)—a position he held until 1979.

After his retirement that same year, he ventured into private business and became Managing Director of Atoto Press Limited, a notable printing company in Ilorin.

In 1998, General Mohammed was recalled to public service as National Security Adviser to then Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, a position he held until the transition to civilian rule in 1999.

At the advent of the Fourth Republic, he was appointed Chief of Staff to President Olusegun Obasanjo, a role he retained under President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua until his resignation in June 2008.

Throughout his career, Mohammed was widely regarded as a disciplined officer, an influential administrator, and a silent power broker in Nigeria’s political and security landscape.

Meanwhile, the Ilorin Emirate Descendants Progressive Union (IEDPU) has described the death of the retired General as a monumental loss to the Ilorin Emirate and Nigeria at large.

In a condolence statement issued by union’s National Publicity Secretary, Nurudeen Ibrahim, on behalf of the National President, Alhaji Abdulmumini Abdullahi, the IEDPU said the death of the elder statesman was “even more painful at this critical time when the nation needs the wisdom of tested patriots to navigate its challenges.”

The union praised the late Mohammed for his pioneering roles, noting that he was the first son of Ilorin to serve as a state governor and the first to attain the rank of a two-star General in the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The statement added, “General Mohammed played critical roles in Nigeria’s history. He was a patriot who fought to keep the country united and later served as National Security Adviser and the first and longest-serving Chief of Staff to the President.”

It further recalled that the late General supported the IEDPU for several years, including sponsoring the printing of its annual calendar free of charge.

The IEDPU extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Abdulsalami Abubakar, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the Emir of Ilorin, Alhaji (Dr) Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, over the passing of the distinguished Ilorin-born leader.

Abdullahi prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive the deceased’s shortcomings and grant him Aljanat Firdaus, while also praying for strength for his family and loved ones to bear the l0ss.

Open letter to Senator Ned Nwoko from Regina Daniels’ kinsmen

Marriage is a union of choice, not of compulsion. When a woman decides to end a marriage, custom requires her family to return the bride price. In this matter, Regina’s family has made every effort to do so, yet you have refused to accept it.

According to tradition, if a man declines to receive the bride price, the community is within its right to deposit it at a recognized location.

We strongly condemn the árrest and intim!dation of Regina’s family members — such actions are unjust, 0ppressive, and contrary to our customs.

We therefore demand that within 48 hours, you:

1. Acknowledge and accept the return of the bride price, or permit it to be deposited at Ikeleke Quarter, Ogwashi-Uku.

2. Ensure the immediate release and safety of all affected family members, and cease any further acts of hàrassment or int!midation.

Trump: Why we reject US thr3at on Nigeria — China

China yesterday rejected the United States’ threat to take military action against Nigeria, saying it is firmly opposed to any external interference in the country’s internal affairs.

Recall that US President Donald Trump had last weekend, threatened to take military action against Nigeria, following allegations of gen0cide against Christians in the country.

The Chinese government’s stance came on a day the Federal Government said religi0us extremists are behind the narrative all3ging gen0cide against Christians, wa.rning that their goal is to divide the nation.

This is even as the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, said yesterday that because of the need to take a co-ordinated national response to Trump’s thr3at, the Senate will take the matter to the executive arm of government, especially as the issue in question bordered on foreign policy and diplomatic relations.

Meanwhile, stakeholders, including the northern states chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, and the Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC, continued in their call on Nigerians to unite against the US thr3at.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, who stated his country’s position in a statement published on the ministry’s website yesterday, said China, as a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, is in support of the Nigerian government’s right to pursue a development path that aligns with its national realities.

He said: “As a comprehensive strategic partner of Nigeria, China firmly supports the Nigerian government in leading its people on a development path that fits Nigeria’s national realities.

“We oppose any country’s interference in other countries’ internal affairs under the pretext of religion and human rights. We oppose the wanton thr3at of sanctions and the use of force.”

Mao’s comments is coming in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern,” citing alleged persecution of Christian communities.

Trump wa.rned that the U.S. could susp.end assistance to Nigeria or take military action if the Nigerian government “continues to condone the k!.lling of Christians.”

Immigration seizes Senator Natasha’s passport at airport

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (PDP/Kogi Central) has cried out that Nigerian immigration officers seized her passport at an airport, preventing her from travelling abroad.

Over the weekend, Akpoti-Uduaghan celebrated her second anniversary in the Senate by commissioning projects in Kogi Central.

The lawmaker went live on social media at the airport as she questioned immigration officials over the alleged confiscation of her passport.

In the live video, she explained that a similar incident happened previously and that her passport was eventually released after intervention from a “higher authority,” a development she said had repeated itself this time.

In a video obtained on Tuesday, she accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of giving the order for her passport to be seized.

She described the action as an unlawful restriction of her movement and a gross violation of her fundamental rights.

“Hello, fellow Nigerians. I’m Senator Natasha. Having completed my second year in office, I decided to take a week off. I’m at the airport here, and my passport has been withheld again,” she said in the video.

“This same thing happened before when I was stopped from travelling even though I had committed no offence, and there was no court order restricting me. The last time this happened, the officer in charge told me that the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, instructed them to withhold my passport and prevent me from travelling because he claimed that each time I go abroad, I ‘spoil the image of the country’ by granting interviews to international media.”

According to the senator, it was only after the intervention of a certain influential person that her passport was released the last time such an incident occurred.

"Godswill Akpabio has instructed the Controller General of Customs to withhold my passport. This is wrong,” the lawmaker said.

She claimed that President Bola Tinubu had instructed the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), Lateef Fagbemi, to withdraw all cases in the court filed by the Federal Government against her.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s passport was later released by the immigration officials.

The Kogi legislator was involved in a high-profile dispute with Akpabio in February over seat reallocation in the Senate, which escalated into her six-month suspension, effective March 6, 2025.

She, however, resumed her duties on September 24, 2025.
