Do you know?
In the final months of her life, Queen Elizabeth II silently battled bone marrow cancer while continuing her royal duties and keeping the illness a secret, even from many within the royal household. According to former royal butler Paul Burrell, who shared these revelations in his new book, the Queen was deeply shaken when she received her diagnosis in 2021, shortly after the death of Prince Philip. At the time, doctors believed she had only a few months left to live.
Determined to fulfill her role until the very end, Elizabeth requested that her doctors help her live long enough to reach her Platinum Jubilee in 2022. To achieve this, she underwent strict treatments, accepted blood transfusions, and even gave up her favorite drinks, replacing them with juices. Thanks to her discipline and determination, she lived nearly a year longer than expected, celebrating this historic milestone with the British people.
However, as Burrell revealed, after the Platinum Jubilee the Queen made a poignant choice: she refused further intensive treatments and chose to spend her final days at Balmoral Castle, her beloved Scottish residence. At the age of 96, frail but serene, she bravely accepted that her time had come.
This moment, when Queen Elizabeth II consciously decided to stop fighting her illness and pass away peacefully, is remembered as one of the most powerful and emotional chapters of her life and reign.
