The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, has flagged off the construction of a 600-bed student hostel at the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja, as part of efforts to improve educational infrastructure in the capital.

The project was officially launched by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Chief Lateef Fagbemi (SAN).

In a related development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubuhas approved the immediate provision of a state-of-the-art auditorium for the institution. The decision follows the anticipated rise in student enrollment resulting from the new hostel development.

Peter Obi Condemns Removal of Mathematics as Compulsory Subject for University Admission

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly criticized the Federal Ministry of Education’s recent clarification regarding Mathematics as a compulsory subject, describing the policy shift as a “costly mistake” and a “step backward” for Nigeria’s education system.

The Ministry had explained that while Mathematics will remain compulsory in school certificate examinations, it would no longer be required for admission into tertiary institutions for students in the Arts.

Reacting to the policy, Obi argued that the decision undermines the importance of Mathematics in developing logic, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills — qualities essential for national growth and global competitiveness.

He maintained that no student, regardless of discipline, should be exempted from acquiring mathematical literacy, adding that the move could lead many students to neglect the subject altogether.

Obi urged the government to reconsider and reinstate Mathematics as a core admission requirement, emphasizing that education policy should advance intellectual development, not hinder it.
