Benfica 2-3 Qarabağ
What Bruno Lage said:
Bruno Lage: "The team has to know how to pick itself up. Reflect on what happened and understand the moment we are living in, both on and off the field. And respond as quickly as possible.

Bruno Lage, Benfica coach, said, "It wasn't the result we wanted. We started the game very well, we had a great 30 minutes, but I feel that the way we conceded the first goal knocked us a little. The team struggled to find its rhythm and we conceded two goals that punished us immensely. We're left with a result we didn't want and a night that wasn't a happy one.

Leandro Andrade: "It was a difficult game. Benfica are a very good side and we know how hard we had to fight to make this happen. A 2-0 lead is a very dangerous scoreline in football because if the other team manages to make it 2-1, it completely changes the confidence in the game. That's what happened. We want to keep our feet on the ground and take it game by game. We came to Estádio do SL Benfica believing we could take points from here.

Leandro Andrade, Qarabağ forward, said, "We had a difficult start, but we just continued to believe that we could get something out of the game. We staged a comeback. I already knew it was going to be a spectacular experience, but the outcome of the game made it an even better day for us. I tried to think about this every day, coming to a stadium where I watched many games as a child and scoring a goal. You have to believe that things are possible, even if it seems difficult.

Camilo Duran, Qarabağ forward to, said, "We're happy with this victory. Thankfully I was able to score. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, but we worked hard and got the three points. We started the game a little distracted, went 2-0 down, but we never gave up. We tried to play forward at all times and got the victory, which was what we wanted."

Otamendi: "Individually, we have to improve. And I think that being 2-0 up and conceding a goal from a set piece hurts. We have to move on and work even harder. We have to put on a good show and get three points in every game. When we win, we all win, and when we lose, we have to be self-critical."

Nicolás Otamendi, Benfica captain, said, "We have to be self-critical and understand where we need to improve. This is not the time to point fingers. It will be a long road, and no one could guarantee that, even if we won, we would advance to the next stage of the Champions League. We have to face up to it and move on.

Benfica's next chance to get on the board in the 2025/26 league phase is away at Chelsea on 30 September.

What Mikel Arteta Said After seeing his side beat Athletic Club 2-0 to get the ball rolling on Arsenal Champions League campaign.

on the night’s game:
What an amazing place to play football. I must say, one of the greatest atmospheres that I've been in. We knew that the first 20-25 minutes it was going to be really tough, especially the way they played, it was so intense; a lot of direct players, a lot of duels. I think after that we started to grow throughout the game, and in the second half we were much more fluent, dominant, and looked much more of a threat. And at the end, the finishers, they made the impact for us to win the game, and overall, I’m very happy.

on what he tells our subs:
That they are at least equally important, or more important. We have discussed that the finishers are going to be more important this season, sometimes more than the starters. We can change the game there, especially with the intensity that we play, especially when the team starts to drop off, and I'm very pleased to see that. Piero comes in and plays six minutes, the first six minutes he's played, and Christian is the same. That’s the attitude I want from all of us.

on Gabriel Martinelli:
Fully deserved it. I adore Gabi; his attitude, his commitment, his positivity, what he's willing to do for the team. Externally, we certainly value all the qualities that he has, and he brings to the team, and I'm so happy that today he was important in the two actions.

on the team rallying around Martinelli:
That's the spirit, that's why I really enjoy every single day working with them and being part of this team, because the way they look after each other is genuine, and they really want the best for each other. They recognise someone that works every single day in a manner that Gabi does, and you can go through struggles or moments and recognising that and having that capacity to connect with him, I think it would mean a lot to him.

on if Gabi had a point to prove:
I was sure that Gabi was going to react like that. He raised the level to Gabi and he was going to do that. He has such a mentality, he's a player that is constantly willing to learn and improve himself, very demanding with himself. That's the moment that hopefully is going to give him the confidence again to go, because he's done a stunning play.

on Martin Zubimendi’s performance:
Zubi, as always, was super steady. I think he controlled the tempo of game. As the game progressed, it was much better because he understood the spaces that there were, where we could weaken the opponent, so that they didn't run at us, especially, as we had to turn them around, and in general, very well. Not only him, the whole midfield, we've found ourselves with a little more space, but the team has grown.

on Athletic Bilbao:
That they are very hard-working, very tough, very clear about what they have to do. They have a coach who gives them an identity and solutions that are very difficult to solve, and that's why it took it out of us so much in the first half. In the second half, I think they physically dropped a little, but we have also been a little more stable with the ball, and we have travelled more together, and it has been harder for them to run. I think they have had more difficulties, but in general, I repeat, a spectacular atmosphere, and a team that can compete with anyone.

on if the boss will get an assist for his Martinelli substitution:
It's always very difficult emotionally to leave players out, I know how much they want to play this competition, and what it means to them. Every time you give the line-up, you are disappointing a lot of players, but to have that experience, I looked on the bench, I looked at him, and in his eyes I could see that he was ready, Leo as well. They play with a confidence, and that connection between them as well, and it's really good. I think that's going to help us a lot for the season.

On calling Arsenal players finishers rather than substitutions:
Yes, I did, and I love it because I don't like other words to describe the players. I think if the game is developing, they are going to be more important in many minutes, so the quality of those minutes is going to dictate the quality of our season for sure.

on the atmosphere in the ground:
I loved it, I loved the atmosphere, as you said, it was inspired, I think that's the word I would use. The connection people have, the passion they live with, the game, the match, their team, and that's inevitable, that energy is transmitted to the players, and that's why I knew it was going to be a very difficult game.

on managing the players emotionally:
I was very clear, they know how I feel about them, so they know that when I have to leave a player on the bench, or out of the squad, it hurts me. Starting from there, it's the only thing I can do, it's my job, I have to make decisions, and I have to make decisions based on increasing the probability of winning football matches, and they know that that's the only reason why I'm going to make certain decisions, sometimes right, sometimes wrong, and they have to stay with that. And they know that if we want to maintain a certain standard, they are very responsible, not only during matches, but in training sessions, the atmosphere they create, how much they care for each other, so all those things are going to be very critical, and all of them are going to play.

on the head injuries Mikel Merino and Viktor Gyokeres sustained:
I think they are all good.

Madrid got their Champions League off to a winning start in a game full of talking points. Los Blancos beat French side Marseille 2-1 thanks to two Kylian Mbappe penalties after going 1-0 down to a Timothy Weah strike.

Xabi Alonso was happy with his team's performance for the most part, despite being down to 10 men when Dani Carvajal was sent off in the second half. He replaced Trent Alexander-Arnold, who went off injured in the opening minutes of the game. The coach was not happy with the veteran over the incident that saw him red carded.

Xabi Alonso spoke to the media after his first win in the Champions League as the head coach of Los Blancos.

The first half hour was fantastic. I liked the tempo and pressure against a team with very well-rehearsed moves. We lacked the ability to convert our chances to finish off our good work. The goalkeepers had their moments. Courtois and Rulli made their saves. Everything happened in a lively match that the fans enjoyed. We're happy with the three points.
Xabi Alonso

On Trent’s injury
Alonso: Camavinga and Bellingham are now much better and will be available to play on Saturday. We're going to wait a bit with Trent because it might not be as bad as it seems. Asencio came on nicely and we have to be creative to find solutions. We have options and flexible players who can play different roles in both defence and midfield. We now have to think about what's best.

On Arda Güler and Mastantuono
Alonso: Arda started very well and then went through a phase where he dribbled too much and lost the ball. He's still developing. I'm also pleased with Franco. It'll be similar with him. He'll continue to improve because it's a big leap and he has to keep adapting. He's on the right track.

On not starting Vini Jr.
Alonso: We're at a demanding point in the calendar and we need everyone. Everyone will get their moment, and the important thing is that everyone feels prepared and important, because they are, and they will be throughout the season.

Now is not the time to say whether there have been private conversations. They stay in the dressing room. No one should feel offended about not playing. We need everyone. The changes are having a very positive impact this season and it's not a question of the starters being the important ones. Football doesn't work that way.

The second change
Alonso: We only had two windows left, and I knew that Vini Jr. was going to come on, so I didn't want to waste a window. I didn't want to run out of windows in case something happened. That's why.

When will we see the Real Madrid he wants?
Alonso: It's a process. It's very difficult to set a date, but we're improving and making progress. The players are getting a feel for the game and realise they can compete. I really liked the first half hour, and we must learn even from the negative aspects. We're struggling to maintain consistency. Today was a tough match against a difficult side. We're on the right track, and I'm sure we'll be even better in three or four months' time.

Alonso: I'm active. I live the match. I like what I see and I always try to help the players. I experience every match as if it were my last; that's just the way I am. Today was nothing unusual.
