Your Excellencies,
I write to you as a concerned citizen and human rights advocate, compelled by the recent enforcement of restrictions motorcycle in Gombe State, which restricts movement between 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. While I acknowledge the intent behind this policy to curb rising insecurity and criminal activity it is pertinent that we examine its broader implications on the rights and livelihoods of law-abiding citizens.
The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees every citizen the right to freedom of movement and the pursuit of lawful economic activity. The blanket restriction on motorcycle operations during these hours, though well-intentioned, disproportionately affects thousands of residents who rely on this mode of transport for work, emergencies, and daily sustenance. Many of these individuals are not criminals, but hardworking Nigerians striving to make ends meet.
Security is a shared responsibility, and we commend the efforts of the Gombe State Police Command in tackling crime. However, true professionalism in policing lies in precision, intelligence-led operations, and community engagement not in broad measures that inadvertently punish the innocent. Criminals adapt quickly; they do not wait for curfews to act. If the police are equipped and committed, they can apprehend wrongdoers without infringing on the rights of the general populace.
I therefore urge the Gombe State Government, the Commissioner of Police, and all relevant stakeholders to reconsider the current curfew policy. Let us explore more targeted, rights-respecting strategies that uphold public safety while preserving the dignity and freedoms of our people. Community policing, improved street lighting, and rapid response units are just a few alternatives that can be employed without resorting to sweeping restrictions.
The people of Gombe deserve security but not at the cost of their constitutional rights. I appeal to your conscience and leadership to lift the curfew on motorcycle operations and adopt a more balanced approach that reflects both the urgency of security and the sanctity of human rights.
Yours sincerely,
Abubakar Aliyu
