EXCLUSIVE: Inside Tinubu's Villa Showdown — President Rejects Senators' Plea for Automatic Tickets, Tells Lawmakers 'Governors Own the Structures'

ABUJA — President Bola Tinubu has rebuffed a last-ditch, closed-door appeal by the leadership of the Senate seeking guarantees of automatic return tickets for the 2027 elections, NewsDirect has learned exclusively.

In a tense and "strategic" emergency meeting held Wednesday night at the Presidential Villa, Tinubu firmly rejected the legislative push for immunity from party primaries, instead reinforcing the political authority of state governors as the gatekeepers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) nomination process.

The revelation follows a veil of official secrecy draped over the high-stakes parley between the President and the extended Senate leadership led by Godswill Akpabio. While official statements from Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele described the gathering as focusing on "matters of urgent national importance" and resulting in "far-reaching decisions," multiple senior sources with direct knowledge of the executive session have disclosed to NewsDirect that the true agenda was one of political survival—and the President was not buying it.

"The visit was a mission. They went in there to plead for a lifeline, for assurance that sitting senators would be shielded from the brutal primaries ahead," a ranking National Assembly source, who was briefed on the meeting's minutes, told NewsDirect on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the discussion.

"They made a compelling case for continuity and legislative experience. They argued that throwing all of them into a fresh primary battle would destabilize the upper chamber. But the President was unmoved."

According to three separate officials familiar with the exchange, Tinubu listened patiently but delivered a blunt response that has sent shockwaves through the Red Chamber: Governors are the leaders of the party in their respective states. That influence is not negotiable.

"He was very clear that he would not interfere with the party structures at the state level to save a senator from a contest," the source continued. "His message was: Go home, work with your governor, and prove your popularity. The ticket will not be handed to you on a platter in A*o Rock."

The Bid to Tackle 'Govs'

The senators' failed maneuver highlights a growing anxiety within the 10th National Assembly, where many incumbents are already mapping out strategies to sidestep grueling—and often expensive—primary elections. The concept of an "automatic ticket," while controversial and often criticized for strangling internal democracy, has historically been a coveted shield for incumbents seeking to consolidate power without facing grassroots competition.

Multiple lawmakers, speaking off the record, admitted to NewsDirect that their hope was to secure a presidential nod that would effectively neutralize the power of any ambitious governor looking to unseat them.

"Going home to face a primary is one thing; going home to face a governor's preferred candidate is another thing entirely. Many felt the President could just say the word and calm the waters. He said no," a second source within the Senate leadership circle revealed.

The Strategic Implication

Tinubu's decision to defer to the governors—the very bloc often credited (and criticized) for his 2023 primary victory—signals a calculated political strategy. By reaffirming the governors' control over the party machinery in the states, Tinubu is shoring up loyalty among the 36 state chief executives while reminding federal lawmakers that their political capital is not solely vested in the Villa.

The President's stance also preemptively neutralizes what could have become a messy, public rift between federal legislators and their state governors ahead of the next general election cycle.

While the Senate President's delegation left the Villa with smiles for the cameras and vague statements about "national importance," NewsDirect understands the mood within the convoy returning to the National Assembly was one of quiet disquiet and recalibration.

With the President firmly on the side of the state executives, lawmakers seeking a clear path to return must now pivot from lobbying A*o Rock to mending fences—or building war chests—back home.

‎F*K mass communication students hold third moot court sitting on media law and ethics

‎By-Muhammad Dan Musa

‎The Department of Mass Communication, Federal University of Kashere, on Monday conducted its third moot court sitting for 400-level students as part of the Mass Media Law and Ethics course, providing hands-on exposure to legal and ethical issues confronting contemporary journalism.

‎The exercise, coordinated under the supervision of the course facilitator, Mr. Bilyaminu Gambo Abubakar, featured simulated courtroom proceedings that examined core media law concepts, notably invasion of privacy and contempt of court.

‎In one of the sessions, Group 5 presented a case on Invasion of Privacy, presided over by Judge Ana’ati Ni**od. The case centered on the unlawful publication of confidential medical records belonging to a public office holder, Hon. Abdulsalam Isyaka Gykil, by a journalist, AbdulRahman Salihu Mahdi. The mock proceedings interrogated the tension between the right to privacy as guaranteed under Section 37 of the 1999 Constitution and freedom of expression under Section 39, alongside relevant provisions of the National Health Act and the Nigerian Data Protection Act (2023).

‎At the conclusion of deliberations, the court found the journalist liable for violating privacy rights and ordered the payment of damages, a public apology, and the withdrawal of the publication.
‎Similarly, Group 6 handled a case on Contempt of Court (Ex Facie Curiae) under the chairmanship of Judge Halima Lukman Yusuf.

‎The case highlighted ethical breaches by a F*K TV reporter, Maryam Haladu, during an ongoing murder trial. The presentation demonstrated how live broadcasting, photographing evidence, and disobedience to court orders could prejudice the administration of justice and amount to contempt, attracting sanctions within the mock proceedings.

‎Reacting to the exercise, the President of the Fellowship of Christian Students (FCS), F*K, Damter Panret Isa’ac, alongside the President of the Mass Communication Students Association (MACOSA), F*K, Abdullahi Salihu Sidi, commended the practical approach adopted in teaching the course. They noted that the moot court sitting exposed students to real-life media challenges beyond classroom theory and urged them to remain focused and committed to their academic and professional development.

‎Speaking on behalf of the department, the 400-level Coordinator, Mr. Fatima Musa Hudu, praised the students for their impressive performance and dedication. He described the presentations as intellectually engaging and encouraged sustained hard work, while also acknowledging the commitment of the course facilitator in ensuring effective experiential learning.

‎In his closing remarks, the convener of the event, Mr. Bilyaminu Gambo Abubakar, congratulated the students on a successful sitting and cautioned them against gossip, sycophancy, and defamation, stressing the importance of professionalism and ethical conduct in journalistic practice.

‎The moot court sitting forms part of the department’s ongoing efforts to equip final-year mass communication students with practical competence in media law, ethics, and responsible journalism, preparing them for the realities of professional practice beyond the university walls.

‎BREAKING: Senators, Federal Lawmaker, Former Governor Dump Parties for ADC in South-East Political Realignment

‎By-our correspondent

‎In a major political development that is reshaping the landscape of the South-East, three serving senators, a member of the House of Representatives, a former governor, and several influential political figures have officially joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

‎Leading the wave of defections is Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, who represents Abia South Senatorial District in the 10th Senate. Senator Abaribe formally defected from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the ADC, citing the need for a broader and more inclusive political platform.

‎Also joining the ADC are Victor Umeh, the senator representing Anambra Central, and Tony Nwoye, who represents Anambra North Senatorial District. The two senators followed the path of former presidential candidate Peter Obi, whose recent alignment with the ADC has continued to attract prominent political actors across the region.

‎In the House of Representatives, Afam Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency, also officially declared his membership of the ADC.

‎Further strengthening the political weight of the defection is the entry of former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa, alongside other notable political stakeholders from the South-East.

‎All the defectors formally announced their decision on Wednesday in the company of Peter Obi, a move widely interpreted as a strategic effort to consolidate opposition strength and build a formidable political coalition ahead of future elections.

‎Political observers say the mass defection signals growing acceptance of the ADC as a viable national platform capable of accommodating diverse interests while pushing for political reforms, good governance, and inclusive leadership.

‎With this latest development, the ADC appears poised to deepen its influence in the South-East, as momentum continues to build around the party’s expanding national profile.

Gombe Govt Approves Additional ₦140.45m Compassionate Support for Landowners Affected by Cattle Market, Abattoir Project

By-our correspondent
The Gombe State Government has approved an additional ₦140.45 million as compassionate assistance to owners of undeveloped lands affected by the construction of the International Cattle Market and Modern Abattoir at Jauro Abare Ward, along the Gombe–Potiskum Road.

The approval, according to a press statement issued by the Gombe State Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, was directed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya as part of the administration’s resolve to cushion the economic impact of the project on affected persons.

The statement explained that the additional support is coming in consideration of prevailing economic realities and the vulnerability of many of the affected landowners, including widows and low-income citizens. The compassionate assistance will be distributed across compensation categories, ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦200,000 per beneficiary.

A total of 2,745 persons are expected to benefit from the exercise. With the new approval, total compensation and compassionate assistance for the project has risen to ₦269,826,667.70, comprising the earlier ₦129,376,667.70 already released and the newly approved ₦140,450,000.00.

The payment exercise has been scheduled to commence on Thursday, 1st January, 2026, and will run daily from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The venue for the disbursement is the New Conference Hall of the Civil Service Commission, Buba Shongo Quarters, near Science II, Gombe.
Beneficiaries have been advised to attend the exercise with their original land ownership documents, two recent passport photographs, and a valid means of identification, including a National Identification Number (NIN) slip, voter’s card, driver’s licence, or international passport.

The statement, signed by Malam Muhammad Gambo Magaji, Honourable Commissioner for Finance and Chairman of the Gombe State Standing Committee on Payment of Compensation, assured that the process would be conducted transparently and in line with government guidelines.

The intervention underscores the Gombe State Government’s people-centred approach to development, ensuring that major infrastructure projects are implemented alongside measures that protect livelihoods and promote social justice.

Inuwa Yahaya Signs N617.95bn 2026 Budget into Law, Positions Gombe as Northern Security Frontliner

By- our correspondent

Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has signed the N617.95 billion 2026 Appropriation Bill into law, affirming his administration’s resolve to “lead with action” as Gombe consolidates gains in infrastructure, service delivery and security. The signing ceremony held at the Council Chamber, Government House, followed the formal presentation of the bill by the Gombe State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Abubakar Mohammed Luggerewo.

Tagged the “Budget of Consolidation,” the 2026 fiscal plan allocates N189 billion (21.6%) to recurrent expenditure and N428.5 billion (69.4%) to capital projects, underscoring the administration’s infrastructure-led growth strategy and commitment to people-centred development. Originally presented at N535.69 billion, the budget was reviewed by lawmakers and adjusted upward by over N82 billion, bringing the total to N617.95 billion.

A standout provision is N12 billion earmarked for a regional security fund, equivalent to N1 billion monthly in line with resolutions of the Northern States Governors’ Forum. The allocation places Gombe at the forefront of collective northern efforts to tackle insecurity through sustained, practical funding.

Speaking at the ceremony, Governor Inuwa Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s priorities: safeguarding lives and property, completing ongoing legacy projects, and delivering inclusive development across urban and rural communities. He said the budget focuses on health, education, social investment, environmental protection, mineral resources development, and includes a special allocation for the Gombe State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (GSCPWD).

“This administration remains fully committed to responding to the needs and aspirations of our people with a budget that is realistic, responsible and citizen-centred,” the Governor stated. Reflecting on performance, he noted that no sector has been neglected since he assumed office, adding that budget implementation under his leadership has consistently exceeded 70 per cent. He commended the Assembly for a “thoughtful and people-oriented” review and assured continued fiscal discipline.

The Governor also praised lawmakers for their unity and diligence during the process, describing their full attendance at the budget presentation as evidence of strong executive, legislative cooperation. He expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Federal Government for sustained support, while appealing for more interventions in the coming year. “We started with work. We are still working. And by the grace of God, we will end with more work,” he said.

Earlier, Speaker Luggerewo disclosed that the House received the proposal on November 13, 2025, subjected it to rigorous scrutiny, and held an extended Appropriation Committee session in Calabar, Cross River State, to enrich the document resulting in modest upward adjustments.

He applauded the Governor for landmark projects across the state, particularly in health and education, recalling a recent state health summit that attracted global experts who acknowledged Gombe’s steady progress in healthcare delivery. The Speaker said the Assembly’s amendments were made in good faith and praised the Governor for fostering a healthy working relationship among the arms of government, including improved legislative logistics that enhanced efficiency.
