I hope Ibrahim Traoré is not making a mistake that will haunt the entire Sahel.
If it is true that Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger are backing a coup in Benin Republic, then they are entering a zone far more dangerous than they realise — because that move is a direct challenge to Nigeria.
Benin is not just another neighbour.
It is one of Nigeria’s most strategic gateways by land and sea.
Trying to destabilize Benin is like touching the 37th state of Nigeria, and Nigeria will never tolerate that.
Detaining Nigerian military personnel has already crossed a major line. This single act may pull the region into a conflict that could have been avoided.
Russia may whisper support, but not when Nigeria steps in.
Because when Nigeria moves, its global partners — the US, the UK, and others — pay attention and act.
What started as a political gamble is now turning into a spark that could ignite a regional war. Traoré should step back immediately. Leave Benin out of this crisis before it gets out of control.
