President Tinubu Still On Course
-Laleye Lashore

Nigeria has come a long way through many agonizing years that the citizens have been made to wander through the wilderness without a radar.

All through those years, Nigerians had hoped against hope as successive governments were clueless, not knowing what to do to make fundamental changes that could steer the ship of the state on the right course which would take the country to greatness.

Even President Olusegun Obasanjo regarded in some quarters as the nation's best president could not lay the desired foundation for a greater country.

Therefore, Nigerians from every tribe lost hope in the future of the country – this gave rise to various agitations that threatened the soul of the nation.

By the end of the Buhari administration in 2023, a large number of Nigerians believed that the country has come to the end of its wits, as all hopes were lost that the giant of Africa could be brought out of lethargy. Nobody could suggest the way forward as everything seemed to be stagnant.

The nation was borrowing huge amounts of money to subsidise fuel consumption. At a point, the nation's petroleum resources were sold upfront in mortgage for many years. We resorted to borrowing to finance our huge budget deficit. At that time, it was obvious that President Buhari could not find a way out of the intimidating economic situation of Nigeria. He was merely waiting for the end of his tenure. It must have been a great relief for him when he finally handed over to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

When the present administration of President Tinubu came on board, Nigerians thought that the situation was already too bad and that there was nothing anybody could do to redeem the country from its parlous state of economy. Not only was the country burdened with a bad economy, there seemed to be no way out of the many agitations bedeviling the nation.

The youths, whose exuberant brawn energy have not been properly harnessed, became rebellious with many of them taking to insurgency, kidnapping, armed robbery, banditry and all that could wreck the ship of the nation. It all boiled down to a state of anarchy.

At the time of the 2023 elections, Nigerians had lost the hope that there was an easy way out of the quagmire in which the nation found itself. So gargantuan was the nation’s problems that on taking over the mantle of leadership, President Tinubu told Nigerians not to pity him for being the President, because he himself appreciated the enormity of the challenges before him. The citizens began to wonder what the President had up his sleeve that could make him exude so much confidence and when, at his swearing-in ceremony, he announced that he had removed fuel subsidy, everything went haywire, and worsened the already bad situation. All prices jumped up. It was as if renewed hopelessness was unleashed on the country.

But today, the ‘dried bones’ seem to be coming alive! All levels of government have more money in their treasury. Not only do we have more responsible governments at different levels, they are more responsive to the yearnings of the people. There is now hope in the horizon.

The next stage for us to harness the present gains in our nationhood is to ensure that the empowered government use the enormous wealth at its disposal to address the most basic responsibility of government, which is ensuring security of life and property. This can only be achieved if states and local governments are empowered to have fully equipped police to enforce law and order in their different jurisdictions.

The situation whereby state governors who are commissioned as the chief security officers do not have their own police commands, cannot augur well for this country. They should use the excess money in their care to fortify their states.

Security problems may be prevalent but without police commands that each state government can equip according to their needs and rely on to wade off marauders in their respective states would only leave the so called Chief Security Officers as toothless bull dogs that can only bark and cannot bite. That is the next stage in the Nigerian project that will bring about fundamental changes needed to revamp our economy and build a viable nation. This is the only way to address the various agitations and hopelessness that are confronting the country. It is the magic wand that would move this country forward and bring about development in all sectors of the economy.

We all know that security of life and property would bring about efficiency in all aspects of our national life, as it would ensure increased food and raw materials production and cause reduction in the cost of living, as well as attract foreign investment into the country. If the nation can do this, Nigerians would then agree that President Tinubu is still on course.

Almost all governors in Nigeria are languishing under the yoke of insecurity in their states. They are handicapped by the constitutional provision that prevent them from having state police as we depend only on the federal police which are poorly equipped and very few compared to Nigeria’s population. This is one of the debilitations that were built into Nigeria’s federalism, which needs to be addressed.

Presently, Governors can only cry unto the federal government whenever there are major security breaches in their states and no matter how urgently attention may be needed, the bureaucracy factor will steal some time before the police are deployed.

In view of the tremendous insecurity bedeviling the entire nation, one would have thought that a drastic measure would be taken to address this issue rather than blaming the governors, whose hands are tied by the constitution on securing life and property in their states. If there is State Police, no governor would claim that he does not have the wherewithal to meet the security challenges in his state. When adequate security of life and property is assured, our nation would be better for it.

MONIYA MARKET IN IBADAN, NIGERIA.

Moniya Market, situated in Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan, is a prominent commercial hub, widely recognized for its large livestock market and a diverse array of goods. Initially a small agrarian settlement, Moniya’s transformation into a thriving market town is closely linked to its strategic location along major transportation corridors—most notably the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. This accessibility has significantly contributed to its development as a key trading center in Oyo State.

Moniya gained prominence through its livestock trade, particularly in cattle, attracting traders from various parts of Nigeria. Over time, the market expanded to include a wide variety of goods, making it a vibrant center for both wholesale and retail commerce. It serves not only the local community but also surrounding towns and rural areas, reinforcing its status as a regional economic anchor.

The growth of Moniya mirrors the broader urban sprawl of Ibadan, as development pushes outward from the city center into previously rural areas. Additionally, Moniya is linked to the Akinyele Farmers’ Traders’ Market, highlighting its strong ties to agricultural production and distribution. This blend of rural agricultural trade and growing urban infrastructure underscores Moniya’s important role in the socio-economic fabric of Ibadan and beyond.

WE TARRIED THERE!

When everybody went foreign, we tarried there!
As a broadcaster, I will wear my Iro and Buba to present English programmes and they said it was wrong but we tarried!

When my mates were still wearing jeans, I was inspired to drop the skimpy foreign stuff and I dressed like women much older. I had the courage to tie ipele Aso-Oke on almost everything I wore.

I celebrated Adirẹ in every way in different styles.

I yielded to my calling in Aso-Oke when it was out of vogue and we tarried there for many years of low sales.

I also celebrated the memory of successful farmers, indigenous business men/women and contractors who rocked imported materials like Alagba which you all know as 'damask' and àrán which you may know as velvet in our native styles on special occasions to inspire us that the reward of your labour is the ability to order your taste from wherever.

We rocked damask when others thought it was outdated because it is part of our fashion history that carries an inspiration.

Damask was business for some people and when people stopped using it, it remained in huge stacks in many stores but it was out of vogue. I was one of those who went there once in a while to say, do you have damask? The little money I paid in those days was received with love and smiles because a token of there frozen investment was thawed for their use.

When everybody was buying readymade dresses for their children, I did too but I also remembered to introduce native attires to the collection.

On occasions when I could afford other styles, I chose iro & buba with pride. Me and other people like me, were those who tarried there to preserve the Kaarọ ojiire fashion heritage.

Today, I feel happy and fulfilled that our fashion sense is flowing like a river. It flew through us, the older people that we saw and the younger people who saw us. We tarried there!

OGUN GOVT, LATE OBA ADETONA'S FAMILY TO BE SUED BY IFA COUNCIL FOR VIOLATING TRADITIONAL BURIAL RITES.

The International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR), has announced its intention to sue the Ogun State Government and the family of the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Adetona, for violating established legal and traditional rites concerning the burial of a traditional ruler in the state.

Oba Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91, was interred according to Islamic rites.

The ICIR expressed its determination to address what it described as an anomaly and a departure from the traditional practices of the Yoruba people regarding the final respects and rites owed to a deceased king.

The council made this known on Saturday during a press conference addressed by its President, Dr. Fayemi Fatunde Fakayode and the legal representative, Barrister Ifasola Opeodu.

In his remarks, Fakayode referenced a prior judicial ruling that affirmed the necessity of adhering to Yoruba customs and traditions for the burial of traditional rulers, as opposed to following foreign religious practices such as Islam and Christianity.

He commended the Osugbo Confraternity, which is responsible for performing the final rites for the Awujale, for their peaceful conduct despite being barred from fulfilling their traditional duties.

Fakayode stated, “The action of the State, by enforcing Islamic burial rites for Oba Adetona, contravened Part 8, Section 55, Sub-section II of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law.”

“Following the recent controversy surrounding the burial rites of Oba Awujale of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, we at the ICIR commend the Osugbo Confraternity for their exemplary restraint and patience in the face of adversity. That is, in fact, a virtue that aligns with the noble teachings of Òrúnmìlà.”

“This poignant moment reminds us that the gentleness of a lion is not a sign of weakness, but rather a testament to its wisdom and strength, as embodied in the proverb ‘Yíyọ ẹkùn, tojo kọ”

Fakayode emphasised the significance of adhering to traditional laws and customs, asserting, “Any actions contrary to this judgment and the laws of the land would be a disregard for the customs and traditions that have been the cornerstone of our heritage.

“The burial was not in consonance with the law of the state, and it is obvious that the burial arrangement contravened Part 8, Section 55, Sub-section II of the Ogun State Chieftaincy Law.” He stressed that the issue extended beyond mere burial rites, representing a challenge to the very fabric of Yoruba customs.

“The actions taken at the event were part of a larger agenda to erode the cultural practices that have defined us for generations.
“We urge the sons and daughters of Ijebu-Ode and the entire Yoruba race to recognise that the institution of Obaship is not only a sacred tradition but also a choice that demands respect for our cultural heritage.

“We condemn the disrespect shown to the Osugbo Confraternity during the event by the family of the late Oba, government officials, and the security agencies concerned.

Furthermore, to prevent such occurrences in the future, we will take necessary legal actions,” he said.

On his part, Barrister Opeodu, the legal representative of ICIR, echoed the sentiments, stating that the actions of the late monarch’s family, the Ogun State Government, and various law enforcement agencies posed a threat to democracy and infringe upon the fundamental rights of traditional believers.

“In consonance, the actions of these parties constitute a threat to the growth of democracy and an infringement on the fundamental rights of traditional believers to their own beliefs.”

“This is an aberration to the extant law regarding the installation and burial of Obas and Chiefs, leading to a state of anarchy,” he said.

He criticised the Islamic clergies, led by the Chief Imam of Ijebu-Ode, for violating local laws, asserting that their actions reflect a lawless character inherent in their practices.

“The traditional institution, being a lawful entity, is guided by law, unlike the Islamic religion. The traditionalists will take appropriate legal action to seek remedy,” he affirmed.
