Social media has a big promise for us online entrepreneurs: Free marketing!

However… the reality is often different.

Not that you have to pay (unless you’re running ads) - but the marketing most businesses do on social media usually falls flat.

You put a post out there… crickets.

You start a group… nobody wants to join.

You drop a huge value bomb on your FB page… you’re lucky to get a couple of likes.

So how do you use social media to get more leads & sales (without running ads)?

There’s a few simple rules to follow that can really get your marketing running.

These are mostly about Facebook, but the principles apply to most of the big platforms.

𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟭: 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗮𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲.

We often add a lot of family and friends on social media… but are they the right audience for your offer?

Add friends strategically. Go into groups that have your target audience, and add people from there, rather than random strangers or everybody on Facebook who has the same last name as you.

𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟮: 𝗨𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗶𝗹𝗲, 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲.

This is because FB wants you to run ads - how dare you try to market for free!

But when done right, your personal profile gets a lot more ‘reach’, and with consistent, good quality content, your posts will be shown to more and more people.

𝗥𝘂𝗹𝗲 #𝟯: 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘂𝗽.

Most people simply drop a post on Facebook and expect money to fall from the sky - I wish it was that easy.

You need to start posting and ramp up your efforts, long before you ever ask for an optin or a sale.

Unfortunately there’s no quick-fix solution for organic marketing, you just have to start posting good stuff right now, and you’ll be able to begin selling at some point in the future.

The other downside is that there’s no set timeline for when that will be.

But the better the content you post, and the more relevant it is to those who see it, the sooner you can start pitching.

This is because FB will reward you the more your posts are liked, shared and commented on.

The best in the business seem to get hundreds of comments, thousands of likes and a ton of engagement.

But they didn’t just set up shop overnight… behind each successful post is a long track record of quality content.

So unless you’ve already decided that there’s absolutely zero chance you’ll want to pursue free content marketing in the future… start posting now.

And make it your best stuff.

That’s how you get traction and how you get to a point where you can drop a post and make a bunch of money.

AIDA is an extremely powerful formula, that if followed will ensure your content is always primed to sell.

You can use the AIDA formula in most of your promotional copy, whether you are creating press releases, landing pages, email campaigns, or product ads.

⚡ Let's explain each one of the letters ⚡

A - Attracting customers is the first and most critical step. There are many ways to attract customers using your content, but one important way is through your headlines.

With headlines you need to grab people's attention from the off, so they click through or keep reading on.

Sub-headlines are also crucial to help break up blocks of text, and add structure, so use them in your content but be sure to make them exciting and relevant.

I - Interest, once you've got people's attention you need to move on to the second stage of AIDA and keep their interest.

This part of your copy is often called the 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱, and it is hugely important.

One way of ensuring you keep people reading is by using intrigue, and you can do this by teasing that you have the solution to their problem or fear, without telling them exactly what it is.

Or you can create interest by sharing a short story about someone who used your product or service and got great results.

D - Desire, after you have attracted people with a great headline & interested them enough, so they want to keep reading, you need to make them DESIRE what you're selling.

To get people to want what you're offering, you need to show potential customers WHAT'S IN IT FOR THEM as customers are focused on themselves, and what they want.

You do this by always outlining the benefits of your product or service in any copy you create.

A - Action, this is the last stage of the AIDA formula, and will obviously be vital to the success of your brand.

If you don't make sales, you can't stay in business, right?

So, you need to motivate readers of your content to buy or sign up, they need an incentive to take action. If you do this well, you'll have better conversion.
