Why I Declared Interest in Oyo Governorship — Oriyomi Hamzat Reveals

Popular Oyo-based broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat has explained why he is running for the Oyo State governorship in 2027 under the Accord Party.

In a heartfelt message during his radio programme on Agidigbo FM, the Kokoro Alate host said his decision was not a political move, but a divine intervention.

He thanked his supporters and even those who warned him against the ambition, saying he weighed every advice and finally prayed for direction, and God approved his decision.

“I sampled the advice of people who encouraged me to contest and those who warned me against it. I tabled it to God, and He approved my contesting,” he said.

Hamzat stated that he does not want to disobey God just to please people who discouraged him.
He also appealed to anyone offended by his decision to forgive him and support his journey.

“I want to serve the people and not be like most of those corrupt politicians. I believe I will win because the people are for me, and I didn’t buy anyone to be at the event.”

He dismissed naysayers who said he would lose or be rigged out, stressing that he has moved beyond fear.

“We have moved on from the point of whether I would be rigged out or lose the election. I am seeking all your support."

Recall that Hamzat declared his intention at a rally at Liberty Stadium, Ibadan, where he described his decision as a divine calling.
He said he never planned to join politics or run for office, but the calling was too strong to ignore.

He also clarified that he is not running because of money, political power, or government support.

“I don’t have money or political connections, and I don’t have the backing of the government of the day. I have come with God, and that is all I need.”

FG Allocates N49bn for Prison Upgrades, Inmate Welfare in 2026 Budget

The Federal Government has earmarked over N49 billion in the 2026 budget to improve inmate welfare and modernise Nigeria’s prison system. The allocation covers feeding, medical supplies, prison repairs, uniforms, and security equipment.

A detailed budget breakdown shows:

N40bn for foodstuffs and catering materials

N1bn for uniforms and clothing

N1bn for drugs and medical supplies

N5bn for rehabilitation and repair of prison facilities

N861m for prison biometrics, arms, ammunition, and security equipment

Data from the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) indicate the country has 77,438 inmates, with 50,357 awaiting trial. Between 2019 and 2025, thousands of inmates, including those charged with terrorism and armed robbery, escaped from 13 correctional centres.

In February 2025, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the relocation of 29 correctional centres to modernise Nigeria’s custodial system. Many existing facilities, like those in Suleja and Ikoyi, date back to the 1950s and no longer meet modern standards.

The upgrades aim to enhance living conditions for inmates, improve security, and create a more rehabilitative correctional system. The NCoS Controller General, Sylvester Nwakuche, also called for extending the National Health Insurance Authority scheme to inmates to ensure access to quality healthcare and prevent avoidable deaths.

This massive investment marks a major step towards modernising Nigeria’s correctional system and improving inmate welfare nationwide.

Abia Resident Doctors Join Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Welfare Demands

Resident doctors in Abia State have officially joined the ongoing nationwide strike, escalating pressure on the Federal Government over unresolved welfare, salary, and professional practice issues.

The decision was reached after an extraordinary general meeting of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Umuahia, held on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

Speaking to journalists on Friday, the Abia State NARD President, Dr Alaede Godwin, confirmed that the chapter would comply fully with the directive of the association’s National Executive Council (NEC) to resume an indefinite and comprehensive strike from Monday, January 12, 2026, by midnight.

Dr Alaede said the action follows the Federal Government’s failure to honour a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with NARD after earlier negotiations involving the Ministries of Health, Labour, and Employment.

“Despite extensive negotiations and signed agreements, our legitimate demands remain unaddressed. We have therefore resolved to withdraw our services indefinitely,” he stated.

According to him, the NEC, at its meeting on January 2, 2026, observed that the government’s actions were clearly contrary to the MoU, prompting the decision to resume the strike.

Key demands include:

Immediate and unconditional reinstatement of five doctors at FTH Lokoja

Payment of outstanding promotional arrears owed to resident doctors nationwide

Settlement of salary arrears across affected federal institutions

Dr Alaede stressed that while the doctors regret the inconvenience the strike may cause patients, the action is necessary to address years of neglect, poor welfare, and deteriorating medical infrastructure.

“We are open to dialogue and ready to reconsider our stance if the government shows genuine commitment to resolving these issues,” he added.

He reassured Nigerians of the doctors’ dedication to healthcare delivery, noting, “We will not compromise our rights, but we remain willing to work with the government toward a lasting solution.”

FG Ends One-Student-One-Textbook Policy, Introduces Reusable Books Nationwide

The Federal Government has officially scrapped the long-standing practice of one-student-one-textbook in Nigeria’s education system, rolling out a new policy that promotes the use of reusable, durable textbooks in schools across the country.

Announcing the reform, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, alongside the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suiwaba Sai’d, said the policy is designed to cut education costs for parents, improve learning outcomes, and protect the environment.

Under the new guidelines, textbooks will be standardised and built to last four to six years, allowing students including siblings to share and reuse learning materials over multiple academic sessions. The policy also bans the bundling of disposable workbooks with textbooks, a move aimed at reducing waste and unnecessary expenses.

“This initiative significantly lowers recurring education costs for parents, encourages sustainability, and makes education more affordable for Nigerian families,” the statement noted.

Beyond textbooks, the government also unveiled wider education reforms, including:

A uniform academic calendar nationwide for better planning and consistency

Streamlined graduation ceremonies, limited to Primary 6, JSS 3, and SSS 3 to reduce financial pressure on parents

Structured textbook revision cycles, ensuring updates are based on meaningful content improvements rather than minor cosmetic changes

Limits on the number of approved textbooks per subject and grade, aligning Nigeria with global best practices seen in countries like Japan, Kenya, and Tanzania

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) will continue to regulate and approve all instructional materials to ensure quality and curriculum alignment.

The ministers reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to education reform, equity, affordability, and access to quality learning materials for all Nigerian students.

Harvesters International Church to Pay N50,000 Monthly to Unemployed Members Serving in Church

The Senior Pastor of Harvesters International Church, Bolaji Idowu, has announced a special financial support program for church members who are currently unemployed but actively serve in the church.

Speaking during a service on Sunday, Pastor Idowu revealed that the church will provide N50,000 per month for three months to help affected members stabilize while they seek new employment opportunities.

“All those that serve in church and are in between jobs, for the next three months, we’ll be giving you N50,000 every month to help until you get your next job,” he said.

The initiative will cover all leaders serving in various capacities within the church, and eligible members are encouraged to register with the church administration. Pastor Idowu emphasized that lengthy interviews won’t be required, as trust has already been established through their service.

“One of the things the church should do is to be there for one another, hallelujah, to help them stabilise,” he added.

The announcement was met with applause and excitement from the congregation, highlighting the church’s commitment to supporting its members in times of need.

Tinubu Orders Manhunt After Terrorists Kill Over 40 in Niger Communities

President Bola Tinubu has ordered an urgent manhunt for terrorists responsible for a devastating attack in Niger State, which left over 40 people dead and several others abducted.

In a statement personally signed on Sunday, the President directed the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, Inspector-General of Police, and DG of DSS to track down the perpetrators of the Kasuwan Daji attack and bring them to justice.

“These terrorists have tested the resolve of our country and its people. They must face the full consequences of their criminal actions. No matter who they are or what their intent is, they must be hunted down. Those who aid or abet them will also be brought to justice,” Tinubu said.

The President also ordered the immediate rescue of abducted victims and instructed intensified security operations around vulnerable communities, particularly those near forests.

The deadly attack occurred on Saturday afternoon in Agwara and Borgu Local Government Areas, with suspected bandits emerging from the National Park forest along Kabe District. Reports indicate that attackers burnt markets, looted shops, and abducted women, children, and students, including pupils of St Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools, Papiri.

According to local sources, 37 people were killed in Kasuwan Daji and another five in Kaima village, while fear and displacement have gripped surrounding communities.

The attack is part of a wave of repeated terrorist raids in the area. In November 2025, terrorists abducted 315 pupils and teachers from St Mary’s School in Papiri, who were later released after federal intervention.

Meanwhile, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Chairman of the Southern Governors’ Forum, condemned the killings as “callous, senseless, and a crime against humanity,” urging security agencies to completely crush the attackers and prevent further bloodshed.

“The cowardly onslaught on innocent citizens is a stain on our nation’s conscience. Such brutality must never happen again,” Abiodun said.

President Tinubu prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls and strength for their families, emphasizing that Nigeria must stand united to reclaim peace for affected communities.

Kebbi, Kwara Reopen Schools After Bandit Attacks

Kebbi and Kwara state governments have announced the phased reopening of schools, signaling a gradual return to normal academic activities after months of closures due to escalating bandit attacks.

In Kebbi, selected primary and secondary schools in major cities and towns resumed on Monday, January 5, 2026, following the tragic November attack on Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, where 25 schoolgirls were abducted and the school guard killed.

The reopening was announced by Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Halimatu Bande, who emphasized that schools in rural areas will reopen later, once security improves. Parents and guardians were urged to ensure children return to school promptly.

“Only schools located within major cities and towns are approved to resume at this stage,” Bande said, stressing the phased approach is aimed at ensuring student and teacher safety.

Meanwhile, in Kwara State, the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development directed all schools to resume academic activities, except in areas still under special security measures. The ministry also launched a radio-based learning initiative in collaboration with UNICEF and Nigeria Learning Passport, ensuring continuity of education for students in affected areas.

The resumption marks a step toward normalcy in states previously impacted by insecurity, demonstrating a commitment to safe, inclusive, and quality learning for all children.

Falana Warns FG: Don’t Let Trump Promote Religious War in Nigeria

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana (SAN) has called on the Federal Government to resist foreign influence in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, warning that US President Donald Trump should not use the country to promote a religious war.

Speaking from his hometown in Ilawe Ekiti on Saturday, Falana said that Nigerian armed forces, if properly funded and equipped, are capable of defeating terrorists and bandits without foreign intervention.

He criticized the corruption and mismanagement of funds meant for military hardware, noting that billions of naira earmarked for arms and ammunition have been stolen by military officers and civilians, leaving soldiers ill-equipped.

“If members of the armed forces are well-equipped and motivated, they can deal with terrorism and banditry. The government must recover stolen funds and ensure they are used for their intended purpose,” Falana said.

The senior advocate condemned the US airstrike in Sokoto, which the Federal Government said was carried out with Nigerian intelligence. He stressed that the fight against terror should not be divided along religious or ethnic lines, noting that criminals do not discriminate based on faith.

Falana also highlighted the importance of addressing youth unemployment, warning that social insecurity fuels crime:

“The devil finds work for idle hands. To end insecurity, we must equip our security forces and provide opportunities for our youth.”

The remarks come amid rising insecurity in Nigeria, with bandit attacks, killings, and kidnappings escalating toward the end of last year, and the controversial US intervention drawing mixed reactions nationwide

New Tax Law May Skyrocket Healthcare Costs Doctors Warn

Medical professionals across Nigeria have raised alarm that the newly introduced tax laws, which took effect on January 1, could significantly increase the cost of healthcare services, making medical care even more unaffordable for millions of Nigerians.

The warning was jointly issued by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) and the Guild of Medical Directors (GMDs), despite growing calls for the suspension of the controversial tax regime.

The laws were enacted through a harmonised set of tax bills passed by the National Assembly in 2025 and transmitted to President Bola Tinubu for assent.

Speaking on the development, NMA President, Dr Bala Audu, said the tax hike could worsen Nigeria’s economic hardship and further limit citizens’ access to essential services.

“Increased taxation will make families poorer, raise school fees, and push healthcare costs beyond the reach of many Nigerians. Government must critically assess how this law affects citizens’ well-being to avoid social unrest,” Audu warned.

He added that the ripple effects of the new taxes could spread across multiple sectors, citing industry concerns that airfares could rise to as much as ₦1 million.

Also speaking, GMDs President, Dr Raymond Kuti, said hospitals were already overwhelmed by multiple taxes and levies, noting that the new law would only worsen an already fragile system.

According to him, hospitals currently pay nearly 10 different taxes annually, including FIRS taxes, PAYE, land use charges, signage fees, vehicle and ambulance levies, registration fees, and bank transaction charges.

“This burden will eventually be transferred to patients, most of whom cannot afford out-of-pocket healthcare payments,” Kuti said.

He also lamented the lack of incentives for private healthcare providers and called for an urgent roundtable discussion before full implementation of the law.

Renowned constitutional lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, described the reforms as ambitious but cautioned that unresolved legislative inconsistencies could undermine their effectiveness.

Governance advocate Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin criticised the government for inadequate public consultation, describing policies without transparency as anti-democratic.

Meanwhile, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi condemned the tax system as unfair, accusing it of targeting the poor while protecting the wealthy, and called for policies that prioritise citizens’ welfare.

Akpabio Provides Free Medical Care to 700 Lagos Residents

No fewer than 700 residents of Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos State, have benefited from a free medical outreach organised under the Akpabio Cares Initiative, a humanitarian programme driven by the office of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The outreach, held on Saturday, provided free medical consultations, essential drugs, and eyeglasses to vulnerable members of the community.

According to a statement released on Sunday by Akpabio’s media team in Abuja, this marks the third edition of the initiative in the last two years, following similar medical interventions in Osogbo (Osun State) and Yankaba (Kano State).

Speaking at the event, the convener of the programme and Senior Legislative Aide to the Senate President, Ahmed Mustapha, said the initiative was designed as a way of giving back to society.

“We are doing this to give back to society, and we believe the greatest gift anyone can receive is good health,” Mustapha said.

He explained that the Lagos outreach was deliberately planned to reach about 700 beneficiaries, offering free consultations, medications, and eyeglasses.

Addressing why the programme was held outside Akpabio’s home state of Akwa Ibom, Mustapha said the Senate President holds a national office.

“Senator Godswill Akpabio is the Senate President of the entire country, and his impact must be felt across Nigeria,” he stated.

Beneficiaries at the event expressed deep appreciation for the gesture, praying for God’s blessings on the Senate President and the organisers.

One beneficiary said,
“We are grateful that Senator Akpabio remembered our community and reached out to us. May God make his work easier.”

Another commended Mustapha’s appointment, noting that his roots in the community helped attract the outreach to Surulere.

Mustapha added that the Akpabio Cares Initiative would continue across the country, revealing that the next medical outreach will be held in the North Central geopolitical zone.
