Dangers of slicing ugwu leaves in the market that go beyond just dirt and spoilage:

1. Foodborne Infections – Contaminated knives, bowls, or hands in the market can introduce Salmonella, E. coli, and Shigella. These can cause severe diarrhea, typhoid fever, dysentery, and even kidney damage in extreme cases.

2. Parasitic Infections – Flies and dirty water can introduce eggs of parasites like roundworms or tapeworms. Eating poorly washed, pre-sliced ugwu may lead to intestinal worm infestations.

3. Chemical Poisoning – Some sellers spray sliced ugwu with pesticides or dye to keep them looking green and fresh. Consuming these chemicals can damage the liver, kidney, and immune system over time.

4. Risk of Food Poisoning Outbreaks – Since sliced leaves are often packed together, one contaminated batch can spread germs quickly to many buyers. This can lead to mass food poisoning.

5. Nutrient Loss Leading to Weak Immunity – Ugwu is rich in vitamins (like vitamin C and A). When sliced long before use, nutrients oxidize and break down, reducing its immune-boosting power. Weak immunity makes one more prone to infections.

6. Toxins from Spoilage – If sliced ugwu begins to rot or ferment, harmful toxins (like aflatoxins from fungi) may develop. These toxins are dangerous and have been linked to liver cancer in the long run.
