Former chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, yesterday tackled the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, SAN, insisting that the country under his watch as its chief law officer, condones acts of torture. Odinkalu, who is a Professor of Law, said five years after the Federal Government passed the Anti-Torture Act into law, the Federal Ministry of Justice, headed by Malami, had yet to record a single conviction, despite many cases of torture reported to it....

The minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, says that another batch of 324 stranded Nigerians are air borne from Turkey, to arrive at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja on Sunday by 9 p.m. The minister made the disclosure on his twitter handle on Sunday. He said that the returnees were being conveyed by Turkish Airlines and Air Peace from Cyprus and Ankara, respectively.

Makurdi…..No fewer than 28 persons were feared dead Sunday afternoon after a canoe they were traveling in capsized in River Benue. Vanguard gathered that the ill-fated locally made boat was conveying mainly members of the ECAN Church Ijaha in Makurdi Local Government Area to a meeting across the river when it sank at Kwaghtan Sule in Guma LGA. According to the source, the canoe which had a carrying capacity of not more than 15 passengers was overload with over 30 passengers and midway into the journey sank. [ 42 more words ]

Disclosing this last week during activities to mark the first year anniversary of the Sanwo-Olu led administration in office, the State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi noted that the assessment focused on the level of functionality and geographical positioning system of the PHCs to identify gaps for service improvement efforts. Abayomi explained that the comprehensive assessment was carried out in collaboration with two non-governmental organization; Health Assist and PharmAccess Foundation to improve the quality of service delivery at Primary Healthcare Centers across the State.
