Oriire Abduction: NUT Declares Indefinite Strike in Oyo

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, has directed all public primary and secondary school teachers in Oyo State to embark on an indefinite strike beginning Monday, June 1, 2026, over the continued captivity of abducted teachers and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The directive, issued by the national leadership of the union and conveyed through the Oyo State Wing, follows growing concerns over the safety of teachers and learners, more than two weeks after the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in the Ahoro-Esinele and Yawota communities.

In a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the Oyo State Wing of the union, Hassan Fatai, and the Secretary, Salami Olukayode, the NUT said the continued detention of the victims has created fear and anxiety among teachers, discouraged school attendance, and heightened tension across affected communities.

The union noted that the industrial action is intended to draw the attention of government authorities and security agencies to the urgent need to intensify efforts toward securing the safe release of the abducted teachers and pupils.

It directed all teachers in public primary and secondary schools across the state to comply fully with the strike action and remain at home pending further directives.

Family Finds Missing Son Locked In Prison For 18years Since Age 14 Without Trial

The family of Gospel Kinanee, who went missing as a 14-year-old boy in 2007, has finally been reunited with him after he spent 18 years in the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre without any formal charge or record of arrest.

According to his elder brother, Gospel left home in the afternoon to play with friends in 2007 but never returned. After an exhaustive search across their community, police stations, hospitals, and other locations yielded no results, the family gave up hope. The trauma of his disappearance led to the death of both parents the same year.

In early 2025, the family was contacted by lawyers led by Cyrus Onu, who had discovered Gospel during a prison welfare and rehabilitation exercise. At the time of his discovery, Gospel, now 32, was mentally unstable, could not recognise his family members, and had no recollection of how he ended up in prison.

He was released after the Chief Judge of Rivers State granted him clemency. Medical examinations revealed he was physically stable but suffers from severe mental health issues believed to have developed during his long incarceration.

The family has expressed shock that correctional authorities had no case file or explanation for his imprisonment, describing it as a case of someone being “dumped” in prison with no record.

The family has now filed a lawsuit against the Rivers State Government and correctional authorities, demanding justice and compensation for the gross violation of Gospel’s rights. They are scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

The elder brother revealed they have received threats from prison officials warning them against speaking to the media and pursuing legal action. Despite this, the family says they are committed to seeking accountability so that Gospel can receive proper rehabilitation and begin rebuilding his life.

Dangote Refinery Cuts Petrol, Diesel Prices Again

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has announced a fresh reduction in the ex-depot prices of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and Automotive Gas Oil (AGO).

In a statement on Saturday, the company said the reduction reinforces its commitment to making refined petroleum products more affordable and supporting economic activities across Nigeria.

Under the latest price adjustment, the refinery reduced the ex-depot price of PMS, commonly known as petrol, to N1,250 per litre from N1,275 per litre, while the price of AGO (diesel) was cut to N1,700 per litre from N1,800 per litre.

“The price review comes amid the refinery’s continued efforts to improve supply efficiency, deepen domestic refining, and provide cost relief to consumers and businesses that depend heavily on petroleum products for transportation, power generation and industrial operations,” the statement read.

Fuel price has doubled since February when Israel and the US launched a war against Iran, killing its Supreme Leader.

However, in retaliation, Iran laid siege to the Strait of Hormuz, making it difficult for fuel laden vessels to cross.

The development triggered price surge, globally, with Nigeria being one of the badly affected nations.

NUC Ban On HND To Bsc Conversion: What You Need To Know

A major shake-up is unfolding in Nigeria’s higher education sector after reports emerged that the National Universities Commission (NUC) has directed universities to discontinue Higher National Diploma (HND) to Bachelor of Science (BSc) conversion and top-up programmes across the country. The development has sparked anxiety among polytechnic graduates, prospective students, and education stakeholders.

What Exactly Happened?
Several Nigerian universities have begun announcing the suspension of their HND conversion and top-up programmes, citing compliance with NUC directives.

Among the institutions that have publicly confirmed the move is Kwara State University, which stated that its Top-Up/HND Conversion programme would be discontinued from the 2025/2026 academic session in line with NUC regulations.

Similarly, Al-Hikmah University announced the immediate suspension of admissions into its top-up degree programmes, saying future undergraduate admissions would only come through the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Why Is the Issue Generating So Much Attention?
For years, HND holders have relied on conversion or top-up programmes to bridge the long-standing gap between polytechnic and university qualifications.

Many employers in Nigeria have historically treated HND and BSc holders differently, especially in recruitment, promotion, and career progression. Because of this, thousands of polytechnic graduates enrolled in university conversion programmes to obtain bachelor’s degrees and improve their opportunities.

The reported NUC directive now threatens one of the most popular pathways used by HND holders to upgrade their qualifications.

Did the NUC Ever Fully Approve These Programmes?
This question sits at the center of the controversy.

Reports circulating after the latest directive claim that the NUC maintained it never formally approved HND-to-BSc conversion programmes in the manner many

If you're talking about the governorship election in Rivers State, it's gone. If you're talking about the presidential election, it's gone.

Let me advise you. I'm using this platform to say that I've forgiven everybody. Come back home sincerely. Because 8 years off politics is something else.

This rainbow coalition will not only win next year. We'll be here for another 8 years. But I won't lie to you, if you're thinking that any miracle will happen to upturn us, it's a lie. We're very much at alert anytime, any day.

70% Of Nigerian Firms Depend On Generators – AFDB

The African Development Bank has revealed that 70.7 per cent of firms in Nigeria own or share generators due to persistent electricity shortages, with power outages costing businesses about three per cent of their annual sales.

The bank disclosed this in its 2026 African Economic Outlook report, which, among other items, assessed Africa’s fiscal policy and tax systems. It warned that weak public service delivery continued to impose hidden financial burdens on households and businesses across the continent.

“Electricity outage losses amount to three per cent of annual sales in Nigeria, and because of this, generator reliance is widespread, with 70.7 per cent of firms in Nigeria owning or sharing generators,” the report stated.

The AfDB said the widespread use of generators reflected deep infrastructure and governance challenges that were weakening productivity, eroding profitability, and undermining confidence in taxation systems.

According to the report, households and firms across Africa increasingly pay privately for services that governments are expected to provide, including electricity, water, security, and logistics.

The bank described these expenses as “parallel levies” that reduce disposable income and raise operating costs for businesses.

“Higher domestic resource mobilisation without corresponding improvements in public service delivery imposes large implicit tax burdens on households and firms, which undermines the legitimacy and effectiveness of taxation and leads to a breakdown in the social contract,” the AfDB stated.

The report noted that many businesses in Nigeria had resorted to self-generated power because of unreliable electricity supply, adding that this trend continued to widen informality and reduce voluntary tax compliance.

The AfDB added that stronger delivery of electricity, healthcare, education, water supply, sanitation, and public administrative services could improve trust in go
