Video Editing and Cinematography Class Week 1 - Day 3

Yesterday, we had our last class for the first week of our Video Editing and Cinematography class. The topic taught was Audio Engineering for Video Editing.

In the class, students were introduced to the key aspects of working with sound to create an immersive audio-visual experience. The lesson emphasized that audio engineering is a critical part of post-production, supporting and complementing the visual elements of a video.

The first topic covered was dialogue editing, where students learned about cleaning dialogue by using tools such as noise reduction and de-essing to remove unwanted background noise and improve clarity. Volume matching was also discussed, ensuring consistent dialogue levels across different scenes. The concept of Automated Dialogue Replacement (ADR) was introduced, highlighting how actors re-record lines in cases of unusable on-set audio.

Next, the class explored sound effects and Foley, teaching how Foley artists recreate everyday sounds and the importance of synchronizing these with on-screen actions.
Sound effectswere also covered, focusing on how they enhance scenes without overpowering dialogue or other important elements.

Music scoring and syncing were discussed, with emphasis on the importance of placing and timing music tracks to set the emotional tone of a scene. The students learned how to sync music to action, aligning beats or tempo changes with cuts or transitions.

Audio syncing was another key area, teaching the importance of ensuring that audio tracks, whether dialogue, sound effects, or music, are perfectly synced with the video. Students also learned about layering audio —using multiple tracks for dialogue, sound effects, and music to create a well-rounded audio mix.

The concept of equalization (EQ) was introduced to help students understand how to balance frequencies and avoid audio elements clashing in the mix. Compression and dynamic range control were also discussed, with a focus on reducing volume spikes and ensuring consistent audio levels.

Students explored the use of reverb and effects to simulate different environments, such as making dialogue sound like it is being spoken in a hall or small room. Panning and surround sound mixing were taught as techniques to enhance spatial audio by distributing sounds across different speakers.

The class also covered audio mixing, where students learned how to balance levels between dialogue, music, and sound effects, using automation to adjust audio levels over time. Noise reduction techniques were taught to remove background noise like hums and traffic, making dialogue clearer.

Finally, the class discussed loudness and broadcast standards, ensuring audio adheres to specific loudness levels for different platforms, and the process of exporting audio in the correct format, sample rate, and bit depth to maintain high-quality sound.

By the end of the class, students understood the essential techniques for delivering professional-quality sound that enhances visual storytelling in video editing.

Video Editing Class Week 1 - Day 2

The Tentmakers Media video editing class continued yesterday as students received teaching on essential skills for starting their journey in video editing. The session began with a detailed walkthrough of how to import rushes (raw footage) into Adobe Premiere Pro, ensuring students understood the process of bringing in their media files effectively.

Next, students were guided through the Premiere Pro user interface, exploring its key components such as the project panel, timeline, and the various editing tools. The instructor explained how to navigate the workspace and customize it to suit their editing preferences.

After becoming familiar with the interface, the students learned how to place rushes on the timeline, organizing their clips in a logical sequence. They practiced trimming and arranging their footage while experimenting with different layers and cuts.

The lesson also introduced basic audio layering, where students imported sound files. They were shown how to manage multiple audio tracks, balance sound levels, and adjust audio clips to fit the pacing of their visuals.

To apply these new skills, the students were assigned their first practical project. This task involved creating a 2-minute video that required them to use at least three audio tracks, combining dialogue, music, and sound effects. This exercise aimed to develop their understanding of both visual and audio editing, pushing them to think creatively while maintaining technical accuracy.

So, at Tentmakers Media, we started our three weeks Video Editing and Cinematography class yesterday. Students got valuable insights as they Kickstarted there journey in to Cinematography and Video Editing.

Would you like to have a scoop of what the students were taught yesterday?

Yes?

Here you go!

Video Editing Class Week 1 - Day 1

The first day lesson introduced students to the fundamentals of video editing, explaining its significance in improving storytelling, professional quality, and viewer engagement. The objectives include defining video editing, understanding its stages and techniques, and demonstrating basic skills using editing software.

The stages of video editing discussed are importing footage, organizing clips, assembling the timeline, trimming and cutting scenes, adding transitions and effects, editing sound, and exporting the final product. Popular editing techniques include linear and non-linear editing, jump cuts, cross-cutting, and montages.

The lesson covered essential tools in video editing software such as the timeline, cut/trim tools, effects panel, and audio mixer, with a brief overview of popular software like Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, and DaVinci Resolve.

The class also transitioned into discussing types of cuts which include the basic hard cut, the time-compressing jump cut, and the transition-smoothing L and J cuts. Other important cuts discussed are cutaways for adding context, match cuts for visual continuity, and cross cuts for parallel storylines. Montages condense time, while invisible cuts create seamless transitions. Mastering these techniques helps editors shape the narrative, maintain viewer engagement, and enhance the emotional impact of their videos.

Towards the end of the class, students were exposed to some essential concepts in video editing, including resolution, aspect ratio, pixel, and frame rate. Resolution refers to the number of pixels in a video, influencing its clarity and sharpness, with common formats such as 1080p and 4K. Aspect ratio defines the relationship between the width and height of a video frame, with popular ratios like 16:9 for widescreen and 9:16 for vertical content. Pixels are the smallest units that form images, determining video quality. Frame rate measures how many frames appear per second, affecting motion smoothness. Understanding these elements helps in producing professional-quality videos tailored to specific platforms.

The lesson concluded with a review of key concepts, followed by a class activity where students practice editing.

Cinematography Class Week 1 - Day 1

The lesson introduced students to the fundamentals of cinematography, focusing on the role of the cinematographer, the basics of visual storytelling, and an overview of the film production process. The goal is for students to understand cinematography's purpose and its influence on storytelling in films.

The lesson began with a brief discussion where students share their current knowledge of cinematography. Then, the lesson defined cinematography as the art of capturing visual images for film, covering key responsibilities of the cinematographer such as lighting design, camera operation, lens selection, and composition. This segment emphasized how cinematographers work with directors to bring a visual story to life.

Next, the lesson delved into visual storytelling, highlighting essential elements like composition, lighting, camera movement, color, and depth of field.

The final part of the lesson provided an overview of the film production process, outlining the cinematographer's role in pre-production, production, and post-production. Students explored how cinematographers collaborate with directors, plan shots, and ensure visual consistency throughout the filmmaking process.

The lesson concluded with a recap and a Q&A session, where students asked questions about the role of the cinematographer, technical aspects, and creative choices made in films. Activities throughout the lesson encouraged hands-on learning and critical thinking about cinematographic techniques.
