Black Holes: The Universe's Most Powerful Gravity Wells
A black hole is a region in space where gravity is so strong that nothing—not even light—can escape once it passes a boundary called the event horizon. Most black holes form when very massive stars run out of fuel and collapse under their own gravity at the end of their lives.
Although black holes themselves are invisible, scientists detect them by observing how nearby stars, gas, and light behave. As matter falls toward a black hole, it forms an accretion disk—a superheated ring of gas that glows brightly because of extreme friction and heat.
At the center of nearly every large galaxy, including our own Milky Way, lies a supermassive black hole. The one at the center of the Milky Way is called Sagittarius A* and has a mass of about 4 million Suns.
In 2019, the Event Horizon Telescope collaboration released the first-ever image of a black hole's shadow, located in the galaxy M87. This achievement confirmed decades of predictions based on Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity.

"Imagine trying to sleep... while floating in the air. No bed. No pillow. No gravity. So how do astronauts actually get any rest?"
On Earth, gravity keeps us lying on a bed. But in space, there's almost no gravity, so astronauts float everywhere—even while sleeping.
Instead of beds, they use sleeping bags attached to the walls, ceiling, or floor of the spacecraft. In space, there is no real "up" or "down," so they can sleep in any direction.
They gently zip themselves into the sleeping bag so they don't drift around and bump into equipment while they're asleep.
Many astronauts say they don't even need a pillow because, without gravity, their head doesn't fall backward or sideways.
To stay healthy, astronauts follow a strict sleep schedule and usually aim for about 8 hours of sleep each day, even though they see 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets every 24 hours as the spacecraft orbits Earth.
Sleeping in space may look strange, but it's another amazing way humans have adapted to life beyond our planet.
