BOOK REVIEW OFTHE WOUNDED SOLDIER
INTRODUCTION : Many years ago, I was in a conference and the speaker referred to a preacher whom God used mightily in the sixties. And he said, “Do you know the man is still alive but how many of you know him?". This statement touched my heart. When I got home, in my curiosity I asked my mother and she told me of the great exploits God did through this man of God who has now become a relic. I did a follow up with him for few years before he passed on to be with the zLord.
This also reminded me of the people we started together in faith; people we were together at the early days of my walk with God who are no more in faith. They were indeed soldiers but today some of them are down! Some of them were victims of teenage pregnancy, peer pressure, alcoholism, wrong marriages, immorality, abuse, drug addictions or other social vices. Today, some of them do not have anything to show that they had once met or served the Lord. This is quite pathetic. Although, some have been able to retrace their steps, many are yet to.
I remembered vividly many years ago during one of the prize giving days of one of the schools I attended, there was this promising and brilliant young chap that won virtually all the prizes for his class. It got to a point that the Principal had to tell him to stay on the rostrum because before he gets back to where he sat,his name would have been called for another prize. He was the overall best student in the West African Examination in his set. Immediately after leaving Secondary School, this young man got admission into one of the most prestigious institution in Nigeria but ended up joining a cult group on campus and he was eventually expelled.
This reminds me of the experience I had some years back when I visited Idanre hills (a tourist centre) in ondo State, south-west, Nigeria with Pastor Akin Olubiyi. We had serious challenge when climbing the hills and we had reasons to stop at the rest points in order to catch our breathe. But when coming down, the story was quite different, we were coming down at the expense of the force of gravity. And he looked at me and said, “ Gbenga, It is not easy to get to the top but it is very easy to fall from the top”.
