OYO GOVT GIVES 2 WEEKS ULTIMATUM TO ROADSIDE TRADERS ALONG AIRPOT ROAD

The Oyo State Government has directed roadside traders and those selling in containers along Airport Road, Old Ife Road and Onipepeye areas of Ibadan to relocate their trades.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser (Media) to the State Governor, Sulaimon Olanrewaju.

The government gave the traders two weeks to put an end to roadside trading on the axis, with the ultimatum expiring on Monday, October 27, 2025.

The government said having built markets and other closed stalls in various parts of the city, could no longer tolerate trading on roadside or placement of container shops on drainages.

It also added that trading on walkways could lead to damaging public infrastructure, blocking drainage system and putting the state at the risk of flooding, which could also deprive the state of the benefits of its investment in the promotion of tourism, stating that such sights could turn off tourists.

The government however urged all affected traders to comply with the directive, stressing that failure to do so would result in the enforcement of extant rules in the state which might lead to not just the confiscation of wares but also the prosecution of offenders.

WORKERS APPEAL TO FG TO PAY OUTSTANDING 3-MONTH WAGE AWARD

Workers under the platform of the Federal Workers Forum (FWF) have appealed to the federal government to pay their ₦35,000 three-month wage award.

The FWF in a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Andrew Emelieze and made available to newsmen on Wednesday, said the payment of ₦35,000 wage award was put in place after series of pressure by the workers.

Comrade Emelieze who lamented that the payment since its implementation has been inconsistent, appealed to the government to pay the balance of the outstanding three months wage award and also clear the backlog of promotion arrears owed the federal workers.

He also described the current ₦70,000 minimum wage as a slave wage, thereby calling for its immediate abolition.

BREAKING: INFLATION FALLS BELOW 20% FOR FIRST TIME IN 3 YEARS

Nigeria’s inflation rate has dropped below 20% for the first time in three years, supporting the case for another interest-rate cut when policymakers meet next month.

Annual inflation slowed to 18% in September from 20.1% the month before, the National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement on Wednesday. That was lower than the median estimate of 19% of five economists in a Bloomberg survey. Prices rose 0.7% in the month.

NBS data showed that the country’s inflation declined by 0.72 per cent on a month-on-month basis.

The CPI data noted that the food inflation rate was -1.57 per cent month-on-month.

The development comes as Chief Executive Officer of Financial Derivatives Company, Bismark Rewane, in his latest analysis, said Nigeria’s inflation would moderate to 18 per cent in November 2025.

However, the recent hike in the prices of fuel and cooking gas could impact subsequent inflation figures and the cost of living for Nigerians.

FG FINALISES N4TRN BOND TO WIPE GENCOS’ ARREARS

The Federal Government has finalised a plan to issue N4 trillion in government-backed bonds to settle verified arrears owed to power generation companies (GenCos) and gas suppliers, according to a Tuesday statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Energy, Olu Verheijen.

She said the bond programme, approved by President Bola Tinubu and the Federal Executive Council, is aimed at tackling long-standing structural challenges in the power sector and creating conditions for substantial private-sector investment.

Verheijen noted that the agreement was reached at a high-level meeting attended by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, and the Minister of Power, Chief Bayo Adelabu. The meeting reviewed and finalised settlement modalities, with a consensus to pursue bilateral negotiations that will produce comprehensive settlement agreements sustainable within Nigeria’s fiscal realities and mindful of GenCos’ financial constraints.

She described the intervention as the largest debt-resolution effort in more than a decade. The move seeks to clear legacy debts that have stifled sector growth, strengthen the financial position of utilities, and improve the reliability of power supply nationwide. “This is a major step by the Federal Government towards restoring financial stability and investor confidence within Nigeria’s electricity market,” the statement said.

The initiative aligns with President Tinubu’s strategic vision to modernise electricity infrastructure by improving grid systems, expanding distribution networks, and scaling embedded generation, thereby fostering sustainable growth and private investment.

This development follows an April 2025 warning by GenCos threatening to shut down the country’s power sector over N4 trillion in unpaid legacy debts.
