BREAKING: TINUBU HONOURS SUPER FALCONS, GIFTS PLAYERS $100,000

President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) on Nigeria’s Super Falcons in recognition of their triumph at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, where they clinched the country’s 10th title.

Hosting the team at the Presidential Villa on Monday, Tinubu announced a cash reward of the naira equivalent of $100,000 for each of the 24 players, along with a three-bedroom apartment. Members of the 11-man technical crew will receive $50,000 each, also in naira equivalent, and the same housing benefit.

“I have received this trophy on behalf of all Nigerians,” Tinubu said. “Thank you for your dedication, passion, and for reminding us of the strength of the Nigerian spirit. The nation is proud of you.”

Additionally, the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, announced a ₦10 million cash gift to each of the 24 players and technical crew members on behalf of the Forum.

APPEAL COURT RULES: FRSC HAS NO POWER TO SEIZE LICENCES, VEHICLES

The Court of Appeal in Owerri, Imo State, has declared that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has no legal authority to seize drivers’ licences, vehicles, or related documents without due process.

This ruling came in Appeal No: CA/OW/199/2022, filed by the FRSC, the Corps Marshal, and an officer identified as COSS 35 (the 1st to 3rd appellants), challenging a decision in favour of Dr. Emmanuel Ugochukwu Shebbs (respondent).

The appellate court affirmed the earlier judgment of the Abia State High Court, which held that such actions by FRSC officials amounted to a violation of fundamental human rights.

In a unanimous decision by Justices Amina Audi Wambai, M. Lawal Abubakar, and Ntong F. Ntong, the court upheld FRSC’s liability but reduced the N30 million compensation initially awarded to Shebbs to N10 million, covering both general and exemplary damages.

The case arose from a 2020 incident during the COVID-19 lockdown when FRSC officials stopped Shebbs along Bende Road in Umuahia. Despite finding no fault during the initial inspection, the officers allegedly demanded a bribe. After he refused, they cited a worn tyre as justification for retaining his licence and issued a N3,000 fine.

Rather than pay, Shebbs filed a lawsuit, challenging the seizure as an infringement on his rights.

BANDITS KILL 38 HOSTAGES AFTER COLLECTING ₦50M RANSOM IN ZAMFARA

Residents of Banga village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State have been thrown into mourning following the brutal killing of 38 kidnapped villagers by bandits, despite the payment of over ₦50 million as ransom.

The Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area, Mannir Haidara Kaura, while confirming the incident exclusively to newsmen, said 56 persons were reportedly abducted from the village, and 18 were later released.

He added that the freed 18 victims have been admitted to hospital for medical treatment.

A resident of the village, Ibrahim Banga, earlier informed newsmen that the bandits invaded the community months ago and abducted 53 people.

He explained that the kidnappers demanded ₦1 million per hostage, and after several weeks of efforts, the community managed to raise and deliver the sum.

Banga, however, confirmed that only 18 of the captives were eventually released.
