Oyo PDP Set for Grand Walk in Honour of Late Political Icon Lamidi Adedibu

The Oyo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced plans for a major solidarity walk to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the death of its revered political leader, Alhaji Lamidi Ariyibi Adedibu.

The event, scheduled for June 17, 2027, is expected to draw thousands of party faithful and supporters from across the state in a show of unity and loyalty to the ideals of the late Ibadan political strongman.

Leading the procession is the party’s governorship candidate, Alhaji Hazeem Gbolarumi, whose involvement is seen as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the party’s structure and consolidate support ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to the Secretary of the Oyo PDP Planning and Strategy Committee, Hon. Rotimi Ajumobi, the walk is designed to celebrate Adedibu’s enduring contributions to the growth of the PDP and politics in Oyo State.

“Baba remained committed to the PDP throughout his lifetime, and this gathering is a reminder that his political philosophy and leadership legacy continue to inspire generations of party members,” Ajumobi said.

The procession will begin at 10 a.m. from the University of Ibadan Gate and proceed to Adedibu’s residence in Molete, where tributes and commemorative activities are expected to take place.

Organisers have urged participants from all 33 local government areas of the state to wear white clothing to reflect solidarity, peace, and unity within the party.

Sources within the PDP disclosed that several party leaders, political associates, and traditional rulers are expected to grace the occasion as the party honours one of its most influential figures.

The event is anticipated to serve not only as a remembrance gathering but also as a demonstration of the PDP’s continued presence and strength in Oyo State's political landscape.

Falana to FG, Governors: Negotiating With Terrorists Is a Criminal Offence

Prominent human rights advocate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has warned the Federal Government and state governors against entering into negotiations with terrorist groups, insisting that such actions could amount to a violation of Nigeria’s anti-terrorism laws.

Falana argued that the country's legal provisions clearly prohibit transactions, agreements or forms of collaboration with designated terrorist organisations, regardless of the circumstances surrounding such engagements.

The legal luminary stated that the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act prescribes severe penalties for individuals found guilty of supporting or dealing with terrorist groups, including prison sentences of up to 20 years.

His remarks come amid renewed discussions over the use of negotiations and ransom payments to secure the release of victims abducted by terrorists, bandits and other criminal groups across the country.

Falana maintained that while governments have a duty to protect citizens and ensure the safe return of kidnapped victims, such efforts must be carried out within the limits of the law. He warned that any action capable of strengthening or legitimising terrorist groups could have serious legal implications.

The senior lawyer further urged authorities to focus on intelligence-driven operations, effective law enforcement and the prosecution of criminal elements rather than resorting to measures that may undermine the nation's counter-terrorism framework.

He also called for stricter enforcement of existing laws and greater accountability in the fight against insecurity, stressing that adherence to the rule of law remains crucial in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

The comments have added a new dimension to the ongoing debate over the best strategies for tackling terrorism, banditry and mass kidnappings in different parts of the country.

OYO STATE POLICE COMMAND ARRESTS FIVE SUSPECTED ARMED ROBBERS, RECOVERS FI****MS, AMMUNITION AND CRIMINAL CHARMS

The Oyo State Police Command has recorded another significant breakthrough in its sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and ensure the safety of lives and property.

On the 12th of June, 2026, at about 0100hrs, operatives of the Command, acting on credible intelligence and in furtherance of ongoing intelligence-led operations against violent crimes, stormed the residence of one Surajudeen Babatunde Adio, popularly known as "Surii Ilupeju", located at Gbeku Area, Olodo, Ibadan.

During the operation, five suspected members of a criminal syndicate were apprehended. The suspects are:

1.Ahmed Nafiu, male, 43 years;
2.Olukunmi Olaniyi, male, 36 years;
3.Femi Odeyinde, male, 53 years;
4.Jelili Akinade, male, 50 years; and
5.Muhideen Adio, male, 27 years.

A thorough search conducted during the operation led to the recovery of the following exhibits:

• One Pump-Action Gun;
• One Single-Barrel Cut-to-Size Gun;
• Eight Live Cartridges;
• One Native Bullet-Proof Vest;
• Two Bottles of Suspected Charm-Induced Syrup; and
• Assorted Charms and other incriminating items.

The suspects are currently in Police custody while discreet investigations are ongoing to ascertain the full extent of their involvement in criminal activities and to apprehend other members of the syndicate who may still be at large.

The Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command CP Abimbola Ayodeji, Olugbenga psc, mnips, reiterates the Command's unwavering commitment to combating armed robbery, cultism, kidnapping and other violent crimes across the state. He further assures residents that intelligence-led operations and targeted raids of identified criminal hideouts will continue until all criminal elements are brought to justice.

No Reason to Keep Nnamdi Kanu in Detention, Peter Obi Insists
