From Struggle to Progress: Remembering a Defining Chapter in Olukeye-Asejire's History

In the Daily Sun of Friday, January 30, 2009 (Page 39), an article titled "Help, Our Environment Is Going Bad" captured the concerns and struggles of the Youth of Olukeye-Asejire, Ibadan, Oyo State.

At the forefront of this advocacy were committed youth leaders, led by Prince Mufutau Sarafa Bakare alongside the then Youth President, Mr. Ajewole Joseph, who courageously spoke on behalf of their community. Their voices reflected the pain and frustration of residents whose hopes for development had been overshadowed by environmental challenges following the establishment of a Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) factory in the community.

At the time, residents alleged that industrial effluents polluted their community stream, damaged farmlands, killed fish and livestock, and created an unpleasant odour. Community leaders made several appeals for environmental protection and meaningful support, while the youth demanded the construction of proper drainage systems to manage wastewater and reduce pollution. Although the company maintained that its operations were not responsible for the environmental concerns, the Youth remained steadfast in its pursuit of justice and sustainable development.

A Story of Hope and Positive Change – 2026

Today, as we reflect on that historic struggle, we give all glory to God for how far the community has come. Through perseverance, constructive engagement, and the unrelenting efforts of dedicated community leaders and youths, many of the aspirations of 2009 have become reality.

Among the significant achievements are:

- The construction of a proper drainage system for wastewater, by the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) which has greatly improved environmental management and addressed the pollution concerns that once troubled the community.
- The renovation of two blocks of six classrooms by the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), providing a better learning environment for pupils and demonstrating renewed commitment to community development.
- The construction of a new 33kV electricity power line by the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) from Badeku through Jago to Asejire, replacing the old transmission route that passed through the bush and frequently caused power challenges. This project has not only improved electricity supply to Olukeye-Asejire but has also benefited several neighbouring communities that are now connected to the new power line.
- In agreement with the royal family, the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) demolished the old palace and another building belonging to the royal family. It then constructed a new palace and a Town Hall on the same site where the old buildings had stood.

A Legacy Worth Remembering

The story of Olukeye-Asejire reminds us that positive change is possible when a community stands together with determination, patience, and a shared vision. The advocacy championed by Prince Sarafa Bakare, Mr. Ajewole Jophe, and other committed youths was not in vain. Their efforts helped lay the foundation for meaningful dialogue, environmental improvements, and lasting community development.

As we remember the challenges of 2009, we also celebrate the remarkable progress recorded by 2026. This journey stands as a testament to faith, resilience, unity, and the power of persistent advocacy.

Indeed, what was once a cry for help has become a story of hope, progress, and transformation.

Baale of Olukeye Asejire Commends Nigerian Breweries for Donating Six-Classroom School Complex

The Baale of Olukeye Asejire Town has commended Nigerian Breweries Plc for its generous donation of a modern educational complex to Community High School, Olukeye Asejire, in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The commendation was made during the official commissioning of the newly constructed ultra-modern school complex, which comprises a six-classroom block, a fully equipped library, administrative offices, a staff room, and modern toilet facilities. The project was donated by Nigerian Breweries Plc as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives aimed at improving access to quality education in Nigeria.

The commissioning ceremony attracted several distinguished guests, including His Excellency, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, the Executive Governor of Oyo State; senior government officials from the state's education sector; traditional rulers and community leaders; staff and students of Community High School; as well as representatives of Nigerian Breweries Plc.

In his address, Governor Abiola Ajimobi praised Nigerian Breweries Plc for its commitment to educational development, describing the project as a remarkable example of quality service delivery and responsible corporate citizenship.

"This donation is a commendable example of quality service delivery by Nigerian Breweries Plc. It is an impressive structure and a true epitome of Corporate Social Responsibility by the company," the Governor said.

Speaking on behalf of the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Mr. Nicolaas Vervelde, the Corporate Affairs Adviser, Mr. Kufre Ekanem, stated that the project reflects the company's unwavering commitment to supporting educational development across Nigeria. He explained that the initiative also represents the company's modest contribution to the efforts of the Oyo State Government to improve the quality of teaching and learning within the state.

Mr. Ekanem further disclosed that the classroom block and library had been fully furnished with the necessary equipment and furniture. He added that arrangements were already underway to stock the library with relevant academic books, reinforcing the company's commitment to promoting a strong reading culture among secondary school students.

According to him, the project was funded through the Nigerian Breweries/Felix Ohiwerei Education Trust Fund.

"The Fund was established in 1994 to coordinate and strengthen our educational support initiatives across Nigeria. Over the years, it has played a significant role in promoting education and learning at all levels and across all regions of the country."

He highlighted some of the Trust Fund's major interventions, which include:

- Construction and rehabilitation of educational infrastructure in tertiary institutions.
- Donation of computers and laboratory equipment.
- Construction of classroom blocks and other school facilities.
- Institution of academic book prizes.
- Sponsorship of the National Reading Competition.
- Implementation of the Beyond the School Career Guidance and Counselling Programme for secondary school students.

Community High School, Olukeye Asejire, holds the distinction of being the first secondary school established in Asejire, a border community between Oyo and Osun States. Academic activities only commenced in September 2013, with students initially occupying a three-classroom block originally constructed by the Egbeda Local Government for the community's primary school.

The intervention by Nigerian Breweries Plc has significantly transformed the school. The donated facilities—which include a six-classroom block, a modern library, the Principal's office, administrative offices, a staff room, and four toilet units—represent the first purpose-built structures for the institution.

The development is particularly significant for the people of Olukeye Asejire and its surrounding communities. Serving more than 40 villages, the school now possesses the essential infrastructure needed to provide a more conducive environment for teaching and learning, thereby strengthening educational opportunities for present and future generations.

Coca-Cola Commissions Renovated Classroom Blocks at Olukeye Primary School

It was a day of celebration, excitement, and gratitude as the Nigerian Bottling Company (NBC) Plc, the producer of Coca-Cola products in Nigeria, officially commissioned the newly renovated classroom blocks at Olukeye Primary School, Asejire, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Friday, March 25, 2011.

The renovation project, which involved two blocks of six classrooms, was undertaken as part of NBC's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative aimed at improving educational infrastructure and promoting sustainable development in its host communities.

Government Commends NBC's Commitment to Education

The Governor of Oyo State at the time, Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala, represented by the Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Adesoji Adejumo, praised the Nigerian Bottling Company for partnering with the state government to improve public education through the provision of quality infrastructure.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, the governor acknowledged NBC's significant investment in renovating the school and expressed the government's appreciation for the company's commitment to educational development.

He said:

"At this juncture, I wish to express the sincere gratitude of the Oyo State Government to the Board of the Nigerian Bottling Company for partnering with us in providing infrastructural facilities in our schools by committing substantial resources to the renovation of these classroom blocks as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility."

The governor also recognized the contributions of other individuals and corporate organizations supporting educational development across the state. He appealed to the Asejire community, the management of Olukeye Primary School, and all stakeholders to protect and maintain the newly renovated facilities for the benefit of future generations.

Furthermore, he encouraged other corporate organizations to emulate NBC by partnering with the government in creating a more conducive learning environment for children.

Headmistress Describes the Occasion as Unforgettable

The Headmistress of Olukeye Primary School, Mrs. Margaret Olafisoye, described the commissioning ceremony as an unforgettable milestone in the history of the school.

Expressing her appreciation to the Nigerian Bottling Company, she said she felt privileged that such a remarkable development took place during her tenure.

According to her:

"Before now, the learning environment was not conducive. However, with NBC renovating the two classroom blocks, teaching and learning will now take place under much better conditions. This will undoubtedly improve the academic performance of our pupils and enable them to compete favourably with their peers."

While appreciating the renovation, Mrs. Olafisoye appealed for additional support in the form of classroom furniture, including pupils' desks and chairs, teachers' tables and chairs, and other essential teaching materials needed to enhance learning.

Community Leaders Express Appreciation

The Baale of Asejire, Alhaji Lateef Bakare, expressed profound gratitude to the Nigerian Bottling Company for responding to the community's long-standing appeal for the renovation of the school.

He remarked:

"I will never forget what the Nigerian Bottling Company has done for our community. For many years, we appealed for the renovation of these classroom blocks. Whenever the youths informed me that part of the roof or another section of the buildings had collapsed, I felt deeply saddened. Today, I am filled with joy because our school has been transformed, and other communities now admire what NBC has accomplished here."

Similarly, the Chairman of the Parents-Teachers Association (PTA), Mr. Mufutau Bakare, expressed confidence that the improved learning environment would lead to higher academic standards and increased school enrolment. He noted that many parents who had withdrawn their children because of the poor condition of the facilities would now be encouraged to return them to the school.

NBC Reaffirms Its Commitment to Host Communities

Speaking at the event, the Plant Manager of NBC's Asejire Plant, Mr. Adetunji Shotunde, explained that the renovation project resulted directly from feedback received from members of the host community.

He emphasized that the initiative reflected NBC's commitment to being a socially responsible corporate organization dedicated to improving the lives of people in the communities where it operates.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Manager of the Asejire Plant, Mr. Akin Osinowo, stated that supporting community development was one of the company's core responsibilities. He expressed confidence that the improved classrooms would provide pupils with a better learning environment and help shape them into future leaders.

Representing the Managing Director of the Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, Mr. Jim Lafferty, the Head of Public Affairs and Communications, Mrs. Yanju Olomola, expressed delight at the successful completion of the project.

She noted that NBC has maintained a long-standing presence in Nigeria, particularly in Oyo State, and remains committed to investing in education because today's children are tomorrow's leaders.

In her words:

"We believe in investing today for a better tomorrow. With 13 plants and 59 depots across Nigeria, meeting the needs of every community is a significant responsibility. Nevertheless, we see ourselves as an integral part of the communities where we operate. We listen to their needs and work towards addressing them. While the needs are numerous and diverse, our major areas of intervention include education, water, youth development, and other community-focused initiatives."

A Day of Celebration

The commissioning ceremony concluded with joyful celebrations as pupils, teachers, parents, and members of the Asejire community expressed their appreciation through songs, dances, and prayers for the continued growth and success of the Nigerian Bottling Company.

The event marked a significant milestone in the history of Olukeye Primary School, symbolizing the positive impact that meaningful partnerships between government, corporate organizations, and local communities can have on improving educational opportunities for future generations.
