PUBLIC NOTICE
RE: MEETINGS ON UNIFICATION OF
THE CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH NIGERIA
Brethren, Calvary greetings to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.
INTRODUCTION
I am directed by the authority of the Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria, to inform the general public, particularly members of our great church (CAC), about the progress of the ongoing Peace and Unification initiatives. The 34-year-old crisis within the church led to the emergence of two factions: the CAC Supreme Council (SC), led by Pastor Henry Ojo, and the CAC General Executive Council (GEC), led by Pastor S. O. Oladele.
It is widely acknowledged that "peace is the foundation of human existence." With this understanding, the Supreme Council faction of the Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria, has remained deeply committed to the unification process since the onset of the unfortunate crisis in 1990. Regrettably, all efforts to reconcile and unite the church have been consistently thwarted by the leadership of the General Executive Council faction. It is a matter of record that the SC faction has actively participated in numerous peace and unification meetings, only for the GEC faction to ultimately find reasons to undermine the process. A notable example is the 2021 Peace and Unification Meetings held at Christ Apostolic Church, Anlugbua, Basorun, Ibadan. The progress made in those meetings was abruptly derailed when the GEC faction procured a new Certificate of Incorporation for the CAC on 4th February 2021. This certificate has seven (7) trustees, all of whom were members of the GEC, with no representation from the Supreme Council. This unilateral action effectively brought the peace process to a halt.
Our consistent pursuit for peace in the Church does not make us the guilty party or war slavery of the crisis. Rather, it is a reflection of the scriptural injunction that the redeemed should strive to live in peace with all men, and also motivated by the motto of our great Church (CAC): "One Fold, One Shepherd." This commitment to unity was the underlining reason for our participation in the recent peace meetings with the GEC faction. However, as usual the exercise was scuttled by the GEC following the filing of a motion on notice to amend their process in suit FHC/05/C5/77/2022. The motion on notice was filed on the 20th January, 2025 against the leaders of the CAC Supreme Council led by Pastor Henry Ojo during the pendency of the peace process. Through this legal action, the GEC faction aims to take control of all Church assemblies under the Supreme Council and seize assets currently managed by the Supreme Council.
Brief about the Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria:
The Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria was the first Pentecostal Church in Africa inaugurated in 1917 and was registered in 1943 with the Certificate of Incorporation registration No. 147, dated 4th May, 1943 and with Pastors I. B. Akinyele, D. O. Odubanjo and Apostle J. A. Babalola as Trustees. This registration included the Articles of Incorporation of CAC (Constitution) that named the General Executive Council of CAC as the highest Authority of the Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria.
On the 6th January, 1969, the Authority of the Church (General Executive Council) met, resolved and decided that a new body to be known as Supreme Council of CAC, as the highest ruling Authority of the Christ Apostolic Church Nigeria should replace the General Executive Council. Since then, no other valid meeting of the CAC had been held to change the name of the highest ruling body of the Church from the Supreme Council.
On Thursday, 27th September, 1990, a leadership crisis broke out during the Church Pastors’ Conference at CAC Okesa, Ilesa, Osun State when some newly ordained pastors of the Church that styled themselves as “Christ Initiative Forum of CAC” led by Pastor E. O. Makinde and sponsored by some senior pastors of the Church, attempted to overthrow the constituted authority of the Church – Supreme Council of CAC. The crisis divided the Church into two factions (Supreme Council of CAC and Christ Initiative Forum) The Christ Initiative Forum group later metamorphosed into what is now called the General Executive Council faction of CAC.
The above scenario was completely conceded in the 10 paragraphs Affidavit deposed to by Pastor E. H. L. Olusheye (the arrow head of the General Executive Council faction), before the Federal High Court Ibadan Judicial Division on the 12th June, 2015, where he affirmed and stated as follows:
“That I have carefully and prayerfully considered the following:
The protracted crisis in Christ Apostolic Church and several calls from many quarters for an end to the crisis, especially in recent times;
The major role that I played at the beginning of the crisis and my desire to be used by God to be part of the resolution of the crisis;
My desire to see an end to divisions within the Christ Apostolic Church, so that the Holy Spirit can move freely amongst His people;
My desire to be of a clear conscience, in readiness to meet my maker at any time;
That consequently, I hereby truthfully make the statements in the following paragraphs of this affidavit.
That the authentic Certificate of Incorporation for Christ Apostolic Church is the one that was issued on the 16th December, 1985 by the Corporate Affairs Commission (with Registration Number 147) and which has been in the custody of the Supreme Council.
That I know as a fact that, the Certificates obtained by the leaders of the General Executive Council faction of the same Church from the Corporate Affairs Commission in 1991 and 1995 were improperly obtained.
That the said Certificates (1991 and 1995) were issued by the Commission acting on a sworn affidavit sworn to by a former leader of the Church (Pastor J. B. Orogun, now deceased), which affidavit falsely stated that, the Certificate of 1985 in the custody of the Supreme Council of Christ Apostolic Church was missing, and which affidavit was presented by leaders of the General Executive Council faction to the Commission to obtain the Certificates.
That the leaders of the General Executive Council faction applied to the Corporate Affairs Commission and obtained the said Certificates of 1991 and 1985, at all material times knowing that their application were improper and without following proper or lawful procedure.
That I am willing to surrender the Certificate of 1995 (original of which has been in my personal custody) to the appropriate authorities for cancellation, and to work together like-minded persons in both the Supreme Council and the General Executive Council faction to achieve a reunification of both faction in Christ Apostolic Church in the shortest time possible, by the grace of God.
That I make the above statements freely and honestly in all responsibility and without any pressure or compulsion from anybody.”
Pastor E. H. L. Olusheye was one of the named trustees on the controversial 1995 Certificate of Incorporation of the Church and served as the President of the General Executive Council faction for over 12 years, and actively participated in the crisis. He also approved and signed into law the purported 1998 Constitution of the GEC faction.
Furthermore, Pastor Olusheye, in his publication in The Nation newspapers dated 9th October, 2015, titled “CHRIST APOSTOLIC CHURCH: TIME FOR TRUTH AND UNITY” corroborated the facts deposed in his affidavit sworn on 12th June, 2015, and affirmed as follows:
“Some of you may have heard that on 12th June, 2015, I willingly deposed to an affidavit at the Federal High Court, Ibadan that the process by which we leaders of the General Executive Council faction obtained the Certificate of Incorporation for CAC in 1995 from the Corporate Affairs Commission, was improper. This is the truth. The genuine Certificate of Incorporation of CAC is the one issued in 1985, which is currently in possession of the Supreme Council faction. I made those revelations in all responsibility and honesty, after careful reflection and because of my desire to be a clear conscience before God, in preparation to meet Him. I also made it because I am convinced that no genuine settlement of CAC of the crisis can take place on the foundation of falsehood. I am not afraid to die or go to jail, or to face any kind of humiliation or defamation of character, the likes of which Pastor Akinosun has been subjecting me to lately for speaking the truth”.
The above statement accurately reflects the true state of affairs within the Mission (CAC). Nevertheless, the Supreme Council remains steadfast in its commitment to pursuit of peace and unity within the Church.
Let us all rekindle the spirit of togetherness we once enjoyed and tell our few leaders who are manipulating and using various tactics and propaganda to perpetuate crisis that ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.
May God bless and unite The Christ Apostolic Church, Nigeria, Amen.
