Nothing I have today came before 30.
Because when you start from the trenches, you need consistency over a very long time.
I turned 40 this year.
I was born in Mushin, Lagos, the kind of place where survival is a skillset. I was always in the top 10% of every class, yet I dropped out of school three times…
Life doesn’t always reward potential. It rewards timing, access, and position. And the truth is: If you are starting from the back of the race with no handouts and no soft landings, your win will take longer.
Know this and know peace. Forget all those Forbes 40 under 30 lists. It is not for you.
And that does not mean you should hate the rich/middle class, or you can't learn from them. I learnt investing from the Buffetts, Dalios, Mungers, Marks of this world.
There is a kind of confidence and mindset wealthy people have that needs to be studied. Poverty does not just mean an empty wallet — it empties your mind, which is the most damaging (Topic for another day)
My life didn’t take off until my 30s.
Not because I was lazy, but the journey was rough. As the first child, I have been self-funding my education since age 18 and also supporting my siblings' education.
This is the reality of a lot of African youths.
Get an ordinary Diploma, try and find a paying job because of responsibilities at home, come back after several years to do a part time degree or Open University, or life happens and they never attend school again.
I initially avoided LinkedIn because I thought, as 3 time dropout, I didn’t think I had anything to say to all these amazing Ivy League, Russell Group, suit-and-tie professionals.
Everything changed when I owned my story and stopped comparing. I now coach successful people struggling with resilience and life.
So if you’re:
25 and still sharing clothes,
32 and broke,
Or working 3 jobs while learning social media management at night…
Let them mock you now.
But never lose sight of your goal.
Real growth takes time.
Especially when you are building without generational help.
So choose:
Direction over speed.
Value over vanity.
Purpose over pressure.
And remember: Your breakthrough delay is not denial
As a life coach, I share every lesson I learn about resilience, hope, and the power of community.
