In the Yorùbá Ifá tradition, a live catfish known as eja aró is sometimes used in rituals honoring one’s Ori (the personal spiritual head and divine destiny).

This act is performed to:
• Clear negative energy
• Restore emotional and spiritual balance
• Invite blessings and alignment

The catfish represents resilience, adaptability, and survival, as it thrives in shifting waters. During the ritual, the live fish may be gently placed upon the head as a symbolic act of transferring and washing away spiritual burdens.

Afterward, practices differ by lineage and priestly instruction. In some traditions, specific parts of the fish particularly the head and tail are prepared and eaten as a sacred completion of the rite. In other traditions, the fish is returned to the river, symbolizing the release of negativity back to the natural flow of life.

As with all Ifá practices, the exact method depends on guidance from a trained Babaláwo or spiritual elder within that lineage. 🌊🐟
