The Oyo State Ministry of Environment, through its Task Force led by Environmental Health Officers, has sealed Calabar Kitchen, a popular eatery located along Iwo Road, Ibadan, over illegal dumping of refuse on a road median.

The enforcement action followed an operation during which a staff member of the eatery was apprehended while attempting to dump a heavy sack filled with waste generated from the kitchen onto the median. Investigations revealed that the staff acted on the instructions of the owner of the eatery. The offender was immediately arrested during the operation.

The Oyo State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, on Wednesday, 24th December, 2025, sealed a premium edible outlet in Ibadan after uncovering environmental health infractions during an enforcement exercise.

The operation was carried out by the Oyo State Ministry of Environment Task Force, led by Environmental Health Officers of the Ministry, as part of the state government’s continuous efforts to safeguard public health and enforce environmental sanitation and food safety regulations.

During the inspection, the task force discovered that the affected food outlet failed to comply with approved environmental health standards. The observed infractions included improper waste disposal, and unsafe ecological conditions capable of endangering public health. Confirming the development, Mrs Areo, a Director in the Ministry of Environment, made the information available to journalists in Ibadan. She explained that the facility was strictly in accordance with Oyo State’s existing environmental and public health laws.

In furtherance of its commitment to sustainable environmental management, the Oyo State Nigeria Climate Adaptation–Erosion and Watershed Project-EIB (OYONEWMAP-EIB) has commenced a comprehensive inspection of stormwater management project sites across the state under the Nigeria Climate Adaptation-Erosion and Watershed Project (NEWMAP–EIB) initiative.

The statewide on-the-spot assessment exercise, covering the three (3) senatorial districts was conducted to validate earlier observations and evaluate the readiness of the benefiting communities for project implementation.

As part of activities marking World Clean Day, the Oyo State Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources on Saturday carried out a clean-up exercise across selected markets in Ibadan to promote environmental hygiene and responsible waste management.

The exercise, led by the Director of Environmental Health from the Ministry, Mrs Bukola Oluseun Areo featured the participation of Environmental Health Officers and members of the Environmental Task Force. The operation took place at Oja’oba Market, one of the busiest markets in the city, where traders and residents were educated on proper waste disposal and the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse.

The sensitisation team emphasised the importance of collaborating with registered waste contractors for effective waste evacuation, noting that indiscriminate dumping pollutes the environment and exposes the public to health risks.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Seun Ashamu, has urged residents to rethink their fashion habits and adopt sustainable practices to reduce textile waste and safeguard the planet.

Ashamu made the call during the World Clean-Up Day celebration held at the House of Chiefs, Secretariat, Ibadan. This year’s theme, “Tackling Textile and Fashion Waste Through Circular Fashion,” focused on the environmental impact of the fashion industry and the need for conscious consumption.

According to the Commissioner, the global clean-up exercise served as both a commemorative and educational platform to raise awareness on the dangers of textile pollution.

Maryam Sanda, who was sentenced to death in 2020 for the culpable homicide of her husband, Bilyaminu Bello, has been removed from the pardon list by President Bola Tinubu, after the initial presidential pardon that led to online controversy on why such a case and several others shouldn't have made the list of presidential pardons.

This was contained in a statement by the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday.

According to the statement, President Tinubu ordered the removal of individuals convicted of severe crimes, including kidnapping, drug offences, human trafficking, fraud, and illegal fi****ms possession or trafficking, from the list.

In a renewed effort to uphold environmental sanity in Oyo State, a total of 19 offenders were arrested by the Environmental Response Rapid Squad (ERRS) and Environmental Health Officers for violating the state’s environmental laws. Sixteen (16) individuals were apprehended for illegal dumping of waste on road medians, while three (3) others were caught for open defecation.

The arrests were made at different times — some around 4:30 a.m. this morning, while others were picked up around 9:00 p.m. last night during surveillance operations across parts of Ibadan metropolis.

Oyo State has recorded a historic leap in climate and environmental governance, climbing from the 34th position in 2024 to 7th in the newly released Sub-National Climate Governance Performance Rating and Ranking (SCGPRR) 2025.

The report, produced by the Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Environment, assesses all 36 Nigerian states based on their efforts toward climate governance, environmental sustainability, and clean energy initiatives.
