The University of Ibadan witnessed another remarkable milestone as Professor Omolola M. Atalabi of the Department of Radiology delivered the 619th Inaugural Lecture, a presentation that reflected years of dedication, excellence, and outstanding contributions to paediatric imaging.

The memorable day began with a colourful academic procession attended by the Vice Chancellor, principal officers of the University, distinguished scholars, dignitaries, colleagues, family, and friends. The celebration continued with a cocktail reception within the University and concluded with a joyful gathering at Professor Atalabi’s residence, where the atmosphere of celebration remains unforgettable.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering was proudly represented at this historic occasion and heartily congratulates our dear Professor on this well deserved achievement.

Director of Administration Pays Familiarization Visit to Biomedical Engineering Department

In a landmark moment for the Biomedical Engineering Department of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, the Director of Administration, Mrs. Oluseyi R. Eze, paid a familiarization visit to the department on Wednesday, 8th July 2026, reaffirming management’s commitment to staff welfare, collaboration, and institutional excellence.

The Director of Administration, accompanied by members of her team, arrived at the department at exactly 12:35 p.m. She was warmly and uniquely received by members of staff. Upon her arrival, the department’s digital display screen automatically projected a customized welcome message alongside her photograph, a thoughtful gesture that visibly delighted her and set the tone for a memorable visit.

The visit commenced with a closed-door meeting in the office of the Head of Department (HOD), attended by the departmental management team. In his welcome address, the HOD expressed the department’s profound appreciation for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of management’s accessibility and concern for staff. He also highlighted the department’s achievements, ongoing contributions to quality healthcare delivery, and presented key operational challenges requiring management’s attention.

Responding, Mrs. Eze commended the department for its professionalism, dedication, and warm reception. She reiterated the commitment of the hospital management to staff welfare and assured the department that the concerns raised had been duly noted and would receive the necessary attention.

The visit continued with a guided tour of the Biomedical Engineering Workshop, where the Director interacted with members of staff and observed the department’s technical operations firsthand. Addressing the workforce, she encouraged them to remain steadfast in their commitment to excellence, innovation, and quality service delivery, emphasizing that these values remain central to the mission of the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

The visit concluded with a group photograph alongside the departmental management team, capturing what will undoubtedly remain a memorable chapter in the department’s history.

More than a routine familiarization exercise, the visit symbolized a strengthened partnership between hospital management and the Biomedical Engineering Department. Engr. Titilayo Odeyemi Delivers Technical Lecture on Slit Lamp Equipment at UCH Biomedical Engineering Department Titillayo Olonoh Odeyemi

Ibadan, Nigeria – The Biomedical Engineering Department of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, recently hosted an insightful technical lecture delivered by Engr. Titilayo Odeyemi during its departmental meeting.

The training session focused on the slit lamp machine, a critical diagnostic instrument widely used in ophthalmology clinics for the examination of both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. The lecture provided an in-depth overview of the equipment’s structure, functionality, and common technical challenges.

Engr. Odeyemi highlighted the three major components of the slit lamp system: the illumination system, the observation system, and the mechanical system, which includes the adjustable table assembly. She emphasized that most operational faults encountered in clinical settings are typically associated with one or more of these core components.

The session further underscored the pivotal role of biomedical engineers in healthcare delivery. As with other medical equipment, slit lamps require regular inspection, preventive maintenance, calibration, and timely repairs to ensure optimal performance and patient safety. Behind each accurate diagnosis, every safe clinical procedure, and every life saving intervention stands a thoughtfully engineered solution, built with precision, intention, and responsibility.

Biomedical engineering exists at the powerful intersection of innovation and compassion. We translate clinical needs into dependable technologies, ensuring that medical devices, hospital equipment, and diagnostic systems function optimally when human lives are on the line.
