A few months ago, I had a conversation with someone I knew from my teenage years. He suddenly became emotional and told me something I honestly couldn't believe:

His family refused to let him marry the only woman he had ever truly loved because she was Osu.

He told me his family warned him that if he married her, he would be cut off from being Diala, and that the stigma would follow his children too.

I was shocked.

But isn't the Osu system supposed to have been abolished?

Then I remembered something from my secondary-school days. A friend of mine was said to be Osu, while I was Diala. I was even told that whenever I drank water from her bottle and developed a sore throat, it was because of the Osu/Diala difference. I never believed it. Wetin concern me?

But now I'm asking myself:

How much of what we were told is actually true?

I'm making this series to explore the history, beliefs, taboos, and painful realities surrounding Osu and Diala, without pretending I know everything.

If I get anything wrong, correct me. Let's learn together.
