Top 5 Sewing Tools Every Beginner Should Have
Starting your sewing journey? You don’t need to buy every tool in the market — just a few essentials to get you going. Here are my top 5 sewing tools every beginner must have, straight from my personal experience as a self-taught fashion designer.
1. Measuring Tape
This is your best friend in sewing! Whether you're taking body measurements or marking fabric, a flexible measuring tape helps ensure your fit is perfect. Always have one close by.
Tip: Get a double-sided tape with inches on one side and centimeters on the other.
2. Fabric Scissors
Please don’t use your fabric scissors to cut paper! A good, sharp pair of fabric scissors gives clean cuts and makes your sewing neater. Invest in a quality pair and keep it for fabric only.
3. Tailor’s Chalk or Fabric Marker
You’ll need this to mark fabric for cutting and stitching. Choose one that shows clearly on your fabric but also washes off easily.
Tip: Chalk works well for thicker fabrics, while fabric markers are better for lighter materials.
4. Seam Ripper
Mistakes happen — and that’s okay! A seam ripper helps you undo stitches cleanly without damaging the fabric. Every beginner (and pro) needs one. Trust me, it’ll save your life more than once.
5. Pins and Pin Cushion
Pins help hold your fabric in place before you sew, making your work neater and easier to manage. A pin cushion keeps your pins organized and safe (no stepping on stray pins!).
Bonus Tool: Your Passion!
More important than any tool is your willingness to learn, practice, and grow. Don’t stress about perfection — just keep sewing and enjoy the journey.
