Pentatonic scale is a "5 notes" scale and the term "Penta" means "5" with the "tonic" meaning "tones" or "notes". There are two types of Pentatonic scales, the major and minor Pentatonic scales.

The major pentatonic scale is derived from the major scale but without the subdominant and the subtonic(i.e the 4th and the 7th notes of the major scale respectively). The Major Pentatonic scales is R, 2, 3, 5, 6(do re mi so la). The minor Pentatonic scale is derived from the natural minor scale without the 2 and b6: R, b3, 4, 5, b7(do mo fa so to).

For example, Cmaj pentatonic scale is C, D, E, G, A and Cmin pentatonic scale is C, Eb, F, G, Bb.

The Major Pentatonic scale is applied when improvising on a major scale. When playing chords from a major scale, you will apply the major pentatonic. And the minor pentatonic when playing the minor scale. Another good application is when you harmonize these scales and see what chords pop out to play them over. What chord can you get from a major Pentatonic scale? 6/9(6add9) is an example. You would play a major pentatonic scale over the chord. And from the minor pentatonic scale, min7add11 chord would sound nice over a minor pentatonic scale. You would apply these in a 6-2-5-1 progression where the 6/9 is played on the 6 and min7add11 is played on the 2.
