Is Western culture gradually supplanting African culture? From attire, language, and entertainment to values, there is a growing influence of Western lifestyles across many African societies. Social media, movies, music, and education systems often promote foreign ideals, sometimes making local traditions seem less significant or outdated. But is this truly a replacement, or just an evolution? Are Africans losing their cultural identity, or are they blending different cultures to create something new? And why do many young people feel more connected to Western trends than to their own heritage? So the question is: Is Western culture enriching African societies or gradually erasing what makes them unique? And if this continues, what will African identity look like in the future?

Can African culture survive if younger generations stop practicing traditions? Culture is not only something we talk about—it is something we live. It is found in the languages we speak, the respect we show elders, the stories told by moonlight, the festivals we celebrate, and the values passed from one generation to the next. But today, many young Africans are growing up more connected to global trends than to their own traditions. Some see traditional practices as old-fashioned, while others feel they do not fit into the modern world.
If the younger generation stops speaking local languages, stops learning traditional customs, and stops valuing the wisdom of their elders, what will happen to African culture? Can culture survive through history books alone, or must it be practiced daily to stay alive?

This raises an important question: Should African traditions change with modern times, or should they remain exactly as they were to preserve our heritage?
