Igbanke and the Anioma Alignment: A Strategic Path to Sustainable Development

The conversation surrounding Igbanke’s possible integration into the Anioma region should not be viewed merely through an emotional or political lens. Rather, it must be approached as a strategic development question, one that concerns the survival, progress, and future sustainability of our community.

Over the past four decades, Igbanke has experienced a troubling decline in both population and socio-economic activity. In the 1980s, Igbanke stood as one of the most vibrant towns in Edo State, with a population exceeding 10,000 residents. The town was home to thriving institutions, a standard hospital, libraries, post offices, banks, and reliable electricity supply. These facilities made Igbanke a model of local development at the time.

Today, the story is starkly different. Our once-promising town now records fewer than 2,000 inhabitants. Many essential public institutions have collapsed or been abandoned. The lack of meaningful government presence has discouraged investment, while the continuous migration of young graduates in search of opportunities elsewhere has further weakened our human capital base.

This alarming trajectory calls for a realistic and forward-looking solution. Aligning with Anioma presents a viable opportunity to reposition Igbanke within a more dynamic developmental framework. Beyond administrative benefits such as the potential creation of a local government area, this integration promises improved representation, infrastructural renewal, and access to broader regional cooperation and development initiatives.

Igbanke’s situation is not one that requires sentiment or resistance to change, but strategic thinking and bold decision-making. The gap between Igbanke and neighboring communities in terms of infrastructure and governance has widened considerably, and unless decisive steps are taken, the community risks long-term stagnation and population decline.

The time has come for Igbanke to embrace a pragmatic path that secures its relevance and future. Joining Anioma should be seen as an investment in continuity, stability, and progress — a decision that could redefine our developmental destiny for generations to come.

May wisdom, unity, and foresight guide the leadership and people of Igbanke as we chart this crucial course toward renewal and sustainable growth.

Don’t use my name to trace my origin, use my LANGUAGE. A name can be borrowed, changed, or influenced by migration, religion, or colonisation. But language carries deeper roots. It reflects culture, ancestry, and heritage. If you truly want to know where someone comes from, study their language, traditions, and way of life, not just their name. Names can mislead, but language rarely lies.

Igbanke is Igbanke!! 🔥

This is Igbanke General Hospital, a facility that now looks more like a refuse dump than a place of healing. What should be a center of hope and care has been reduced to a shadow of its purpose, overgrown, unkempt, and neglected like a forgotten storeroom.

Igbanke is a historic and prominent town in Edo State. Its people deserve not just basic amenities, but access to quality healthcare and other essential services. Sadly, the continued neglect by the Edo State Government speaks volumes about the systemic abandonment of Igbanke.

This long-standing marginalisation is one of the many major reasons the people of Igbanke are aligning with the push for the creation of Anioma State, a place where they hope their voices will finally be heard, and their needs prioritised. This is not just about infrastructure; it’s about dignity. Igbanke deserves better.

IGBANKE YOUTH DECIDE: “We Want Freedom, Not War"

The youths of Igbanke, a culturally rich community currently within Edo State, have declared their constitutional right to self-determination, calling for inclusion in the proposed Anioma State. Under the banner "Igbanke Youth Decide," the movement emphasises that their demand is not an act of hostility, but a peaceful agitation for freedom, fairness, and cultural alignment.

Referencing historical precedence, the group cited how the Yoruba communities of Imeri and Idoani formerly in Bendel State (now Edo), peacefully joined Ondo State during the creation of Delta and Edo States. The Igbanke people say they are seeking the same opportunity, to realign with a state where their language, culture, and governance structures are respected.

“We are tired of being politically marginalized, culturally disconnected, and treated as third-class citizens,” said Prince Lucky O., a vocal advocate of the movement. “This is not about political or personal gain. This is a call for collective liberation, cultural preservation, and democratic equity for Ndi-Igbanke.”

The call is now going out to all sons and daughters of Igbanke to unite, regardless of political affiliations or zoning controversies, and support the cause. As Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed.”

Long Live Igbanke. Long Live Anioma.
