The NWFL secretariat has confirmed on Tuesday, May 9, 2023, that the 2023 Nigeria Women's Football League Premiership Super 6 finals in Asaba, Delta State will now run from June 9 to 16.

In a circular to clubs, the NWFL's governing body, through Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, confirmed the exciting development following a new approval from the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation.

The NWFL Premiership Super 6 which was initially scheduled for May 5 to 12, 2023, was postponed due to the upcoming WAFU-B U20 Women's Cup in Ghana.
Participating teams are Rivers Angels, Delta Queens, Edo Queens, Bayelsa Queens, Confluence Queens and Robo Queens.

The eventual winner of this year's NWFL Super Six tournament will represent Nigeria in WAFU-B Zonal qualifiers for the 2023 CAF Women's Champions League.

With the 33rd edition of the African Weightlifting Championship around the corner, Nigeria is set for the African Weightlifting Championship that will take place in Tunisia 🇹🇳 penciled for May 11 to May 20, 2023.

With at least 180 athletes expected to take part in the championship that will take place at Hammadi Ben Ammar Hall in La Goulette Tunisia, Nigeria is among the 21 countries that will take part in the championship that doubles as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The list of participating countries includes the host country, Tunisia, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Mauritania, Sudan, Uganda, Mauritius, South Africa, Sierra Leone, Seychelles, Zambia, Cameroon, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, DR Congo, Ghana,Madagascar, and Azerbaijan who have confirmed they will be in the competition a substitute for missing out on the European Championship held in Yerevan due to diplomatic challenges with the Armenians.

Preparations for the World University Games scheduled for Chengdu China 🇨🇳, are in top gear as 315 athletes from 41 Universities in Nigeria assemble to compete at the 2023 NUGA TRIALS in Benin City, Edo State.

With athlete’s trooping in their numbers at the venue yesterday May 8th 2023, the trials which is set to end on May 14th 2023 will feature seven sports, including; athletics, badminton, Judo, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, and tennis all at the University of Benin and Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium.

Poised to be exciting showcase of Nigeria's top university-level talent as athletes compete for the chance to represent their country at the prestigious international event. The trials are also an opportunity for athletes to demonstrate their skills and ability to compete at the highest level, inspiring others to take up sports and pursue their athletic dreams.

With the Super Six to decide who wins the Nigerian Premier Football League and qualifies for continental football, Remo Stars Sports Club mental strength was tested to the fullest at the New Jos stadium as nearest rivals Plateau United FC were on the verge of dismantling their hopes after taking 70th minute lead through Zeidu Salisu.

Egyptians Omar Assar and Hana Goda are the 2023 ITTF-Africa Cup men’s and women’s singles champions following scintillating displays at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani indoor gymnasium.

Assar defeated Nigerian legend Quadri Aruna 4-1 in the best of seven men’s singles final to retain the crown he won in 2022. Meanwhile, 15 year old Hana God staged a stunning comeback to defend the women’s singles title with a convincing 4-3 victory over Olympian and multiple winner Dina Meshref.

In the process, the Germany-based Egyptian star entered her name in the annals of table tennis history as the youngest ever player to defend a senior Africa continental title at the age of 15 after winning her first title in 2022 at age 14 in Lagos.

African champions Quadri Aruna of Nigeria and Dina Meshref of Egypt have been handed tricky ties in the first round of the WTT Contender Durban taking place at the Olive Convention Center Durban in South Africa.

The Nigerian and the Egyptian rank number 4 in the men’s and women’s singles and are expected to kick start their campaigns from the main draw in the first WTT Series taking place in South Africa which serves as a dress rehearsal for the 2023 World Championships in Durban come May.

Aruna who is the highest ranked African player in the world rated 15th will face Chinese sensation Sun Wen in the first round of the men’s singles while Meshref who is the only top ranked African listed among the top seeds will confront German Chinese-born Yuan Wan, with the Egyptian needing to be at her best against the skillful German ranked 86th in the world.

The $75,000 prize money tournament ends on January 15 with winners getting 400 ranking points.

The Nigeria Football Federation has released the schedules for this year’s Federation Cup competition with the tournament set to begin on February 18.
According to a statement sent by the NFF to all state Football Associations and dated January 9, the preliminary and final of the competition at the state level will commence on February 18 and end March 19.

Club registration at the state level starts January 16, while submission of players forms for the production of license holds between January 31 to February 6.

Furtherance to that, the NFF in a statement released on Tuesday reviewed downwards the registration fees clubs would pay to take part in the Federation Cup. While the male clubs will part with the sum of N70,000 to be part of this year’s competition, the female clubs will pay N50,000 as against the initial N120,000 (men) and N100,000 (women).

Contingents of polytechnics across Nigeria will start arriving at the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State for the 21st Nigeria Polytechnic Games, which hold between Wednesday January 11th - Sunday January 22nd, 2023.

Expected at the games is over 2600 athletes from 40 institutions across Nigeria, the event was initially scheduled to hold between November 20 and December 11, 2022 but was pushed forward due to logistics.

This year’s games will feature nine events: athletics, football, volleyball, basketball, badminton, tennis, table tennis, scrabble and chess. The last edition which held in 2020 at Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, saw Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti finish first and YABATECH taking the second spot.
