The Evangelism Palava - Episode 2
We continued our journey and were led to preach at a particular house. When we arrived, Bro. David knocked on the door while Sis. Chioma shouted, “Hello, who’s at home?”
A boy and a girl, about 14 and 12 years old respectively, came out. The girl immediately exclaimed, “Ah! They’re preachers!” They both greeted us, but the boy added, with a face that looked as if he was about to cry, “We would have loved to listen to you now, but our parents…”
I asked, “What happened to your parents?” The young girl replied, “Our parents never like it when people come to preach the gospel. We’ve had countless experiences where they chased people away. They even use our dog to scare people off sometimes.”
I asked, “Are your parents around?” They said, “No.”
I then asked, “Are you Christians?” They responded, “Yes.”
I went further, “Do they preach sermons in your church?” Their answer was also a yes.
Then Sis. Shade cut in with a smile, “My friends, since your parents aren’t around now, could you please allow us to share the word of God with you for about fifteen minutes?” They both agreed, nodding in affirmation.
We preached for about ten minutes. While I was speaking, I noticed the boy pointing in a particular direction. I didn’t pay much attention because I assumed it was just one of those playful things kids do.
Unbeknownst to me, the boy was trying to alert me that his parents were entering the compound. He even started hitting his leg on the floor, but I misinterpreted it as a sign that he was fed up and didn’t want to listen anymore.
As I focused on preaching and ignored the boy’s gestures, I suddenly felt drenched with water. That was when I realized what was happening. The children’s parents had poured water on us, and, to make matters worse, they released their security dog.
What followed next was a scene straight out of an action movie! We ran like athletes in a 200-meter relay race, trying to escape the dog.
When we finally stopped running and caught our breath, Bro. David, panting heavily, said, “This is a reminder that we need to be more cautious and pray for wisdom before entering certain places.”
Sis. Shade, brushing water off her clothes, added, “And maybe next time, we should also take note of body language. That boy was clearly trying to warn us!”
I chuckled, despite the ordeal. “True, but it also shows how much resistance there is to the gospel. May God give us the courage to keep pressing on.”
Bro. David then added, “You know, Jesus warned us about situations like this. He said in Matthew 10:16, ‘Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.’ I think we need to apply that wisdom more often.”
We all nodded in agreement and prayed silently, thanking God for protecting us from what could have been worse.
