Police arrest INEC staff, NYSC member for alleged electoral malpractice in Osun

Police operatives in Osun State have arrested a staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Makanjuola Bilahu, over alleged electoral malpractice.

The suspect who was supervising the collection of voters card, was arrested alongside a youth corp member attached to the INEC office, Orji Nkenna, and one Oluwatobi Ogini.

The command’s spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, in a statement on Saturday, July 2, disclosed that the suspects were arrested for alleged electoral offences.

“On 30th June 2022 at about 1040hrs, a complainant reported at Osu Division that, on 29th June 2022, at about 1000hrs, he went to INEC office located at Atakumosa West Local Government Area, Osu, Osun State to collect his permanent Voter’s Card but could not find it.

He consequently demanded the register and discovered that one Orji Desmond Nkenna, a corps member attached to INEC office as an Ad-Hoc staff in charge of Voter’s Card distribution has collected his PVC on the order of one Wale Ojo and Ijamakinwa Olaoluwa now at large both members of People Democratic Party (PDP) for financial transaction.

On receipt of the complaint, police detective immediately swung into action and arrested the principal suspect along with the INEC supervisor to the alleged corps member Mrs Makanjuola Bilahu (58) and one Mr Oluwatobi Ogini (32) to investigate the level of their involvement.

The police are on the trail of the fleeing suspects. The suspects will be charged to court after the completion of the investigation,” she stated.

Russia vs Ukraine: Nigeria is ready to supply gas across Europe – Pres. Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has indicated that Nigeria is ready to fill the natural gas gaps in Europe predicated by the current Russian-Ukrainian cr .

He made the announcement on Thursday, June 30, in Lisbon, Portugal, where he is on a State Visit, Garba Shehu, presidential spokesperson said in a statement.

According to the statement, Buhari said with over 200 million mainly young people, Nigeria is ready to be the hub of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA).

He urged Portugal to consider Nigeria as a valued and trusted partner in Africa at a time the world was going through turbulent times.

President Buhari identified five key areas of cooperation and collaboration capable of moving both countries forward, including oil and gas, tourism and hospitality industry, air travel, security and joint commission.

On oil and gas, President Buhari said with the current Russian-Ukraine w@r, increased cooperation in oil and gas between the two countries has become vital to avoid cr in the demand and supply chain, even as Nigeria is already a major supplier of gas to Portugal.

On tourism, the President noted that Nigeria had huge potential in the sector and would like to benefit from Portugal’s expertise.

On air travel, he emphasized the need to sign a Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) and establish a direct air link between the two countries.
