What if Nigeria’s next big test in financial innovation isn’t about technology but accountability?
The CBN has opened applications for the second cohort of its Regulatory Sandbox, covering virtual assets and data-enabled financial services.
The opportunity is significant.
But there is a bigger question: what happens to what regulators learn?
Nigeria’s first sandbox attracted more than 1,000 applications, yet there is limited public information on how many products were tested, what worked, what failed, or how those lessons shaped regulation.
For Cohort 2, success should mean more than getting innovative products into a controlled environment.
It should mean turning those experiments into:
• stronger consumer protection
• greater financial inclusion
• better data governance
• clearer regulation
• and, importantly, public accountability.
Because responsible finance is not just about allowing innovation.
It is about making sure innovation works responsibly for the people it is meant to serve.
