Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has made it clear that he will not follow Governor Douye Diri into the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He remains loyal to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This statement comes after Diri’s recent resignation from the PDP, which was shared by his spokesman Daniel Alabrah.
Diri’s switch during the State Executive Council meeting has created a divide among political figures in the state. Some are choosing to stand by their party rather than personal ties.
Reports indicate that Ewhrudjakpo intentionally missed the meeting where Diri announced his defection, signaling his disapproval of the move. A senior government source noted, “The Deputy Governor didn’t attend because he’s not defecting alongside the governor.”
Supporters of the PDP, including former Governor Seriake Dickson, echo Ewhrudjakpo’s stance and are committed to maintaining the party's strength in Bayelsa. “The Deputy Governor and other leaders are still with the PDP; we’re going nowhere,” a source stated.
However, tensions are rising. Some lawmakers who have joined Diri in the APC are contemplating impeachment proceedings against Ewhrudjakpo for “gross misconduct,” likely due to his decision to stay with the PDP. Another insider suggested that if the State Assembly targets him for his loyalty, he might pursue legal action.
Ewhrudjakpo, a lawyer and former senator for Bayelsa West, has been a dedicated member of the PDP since he and Diri were elected in 2019 and re-elected in 2023. Known for his calm demeanor, he emphasizes political loyalty and stability. Observers believe this situation could be a pivotal moment for the political scene in Bayelsa, testing party loyalty and ideology in a region traditionally dominated by the PDP.
