Black Pepper Leaves

Botanical Name: Piper nigrum

Common Use: Very rare in African cooking. The seeds of black pepper (peppercorns) are what's mostly used worldwide for spice.

Leaf Characteristics:

Shiny, smooth surface

Mild aroma (compared to uziza)

Often used in Asian cuisines, not common in Nigerian cooking

Flavor: Mild, slightly peppery — not as bold or aromatic as uziza

Availability in Nigeria: Very rare or almost unknown

****Uziza Leaves (West African Pepper Leaves)

Botanical Name: Piper guineense

Common Use: Widely used in Nigerian and West African cooking, especially in soups like Ofe Nsala, Egusi, or Pepper Soup.

Leaf Characteristics:

Slightly rough texture

Smaller, thinner leaves than black pepper

Strong peppery and aromatic scent

Flavor: Bold, spicy, and earthy — adds heat and traditional flavor

Used in: Both the leaves (fresh or dried) and seeds (uziza seeds) are used in soups
