The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, is set to confer the prestigious title of “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” on Seyi, son of President Bola Tinubu, this Saturday.

On the same occasion, the monarch will also install Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, representing Zamfara West, as the “Obaloyin of Yorubaland.” The chieftaincy announcement was revealed in a flier obtained by PUNCH Online on social media on Wednesday.

In the flier, Oba Owoade and his wife, Ayaba Abiwumi Owoade, invited the public to attend the event scheduled for Saturday, December 21, 2025. The title “Okanlomo of Yorubaland” is a highly esteemed Yoruba honor meaning “beloved child” or “one dear to the hearts of all Yoruba people,” symbolising affection and prominence within the Yoruba community.

Confirming the installation to our source, the Alaafin’s media aide, Bode Durojaiye, said the event will go ahead as planned, with an official press statement expected to be released shortly.

Senate Declines to Debate Motion on FCT Administrative Issues,
Rules It Procedurally Defective

A motion seeking an investigation into alleged land grabbing, demolitions, salaries, sewage disposal, and other administrative issues in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) faced a setback in the Senate on Wednesday, December 17, after it was ruled procedurally defective.

Sponsored by Senator Ireti Kingibe, the motion was presented as a matter of urgent national importance under Orders 41 and 51 of the Senate Standing Rules. It highlighted concerns over alleged illegal land revocations, forced evictions, reallocations, and the use of green areas in Abuja’s Master Plan for infrastructure rather than their designated environmental and service purposes.

Senator Kingibe reminded the upper chamber that it had previously intervened in similar matters less than a year ago, summoning the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, over issues relating to unlawful land administration, disregard for due process, and encroachment on legally vested land rights. She expressed concern that the same challenges persist despite earlier legislative action.

However, the Senate declined to debate the motion, ruling that it failed to meet the criteria for urgency. Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin described the motion as “dead on arrival,” commending the FCT Minister for his role in transforming Abuja.

Court Dismisses Malami’s Quest for Bail from EFCC Custody

Justice Babangida Hassan of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court, Abuja has dismissed summons for bail filed by former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Salami, SAN, against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

He gave the ruling on Thursday, December 18, 2025.

Malami, through his counsel, Dr. Suliaman Hassan, SAN, had approached the court seeking bail from the custody of the EFCC, arguing that his detention by the Commission in its ongoing investigation, was illegal.

However, counsel to the EFCC, Chief J.S. Okutepa, SAN, submitted that the EFCC was holding the former Minister through a valid Remand Order obtained at an FCT High Court granted by Justice S. C Oriji. He equally affirmed that the EFCC was a law-abiding Commission that would not detain a suspect beyond the lawful period without an order of the court.

In his ruling, Justice Hassan held, quoting Section 35 of the Constitution, that since there was a provision in the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, ACJA, for detention, Malami was lawfully detained by the Remand Order of the court. “Asking this court to grant this application is tantamount to inviting the court to sit as an appellate court over an application made by a court of coordinate jurisdiction which the court has no power to do”, he said.

U.S. Defence Department Proposes Three‑Tier Military Intervention in Nigeria

The U.S. Department of Defense, through U.S. Africa Command, has drawn up three distinct proposals for possible military intervention in Nigeria — “heavy,” “medium,” and “light” — each outlining a different level of engagement.

• Heavy option: Deploy an aircraft‑carrier strike group to the Gulf of Guinea, backed by fighter jets or long‑range bombers that could hit militant targets deep in northern Nigeria.

• Medium option: Use MQ‑9 Reaper and MQ‑1 Predator drones for targeted strikes on insurgent camps, convoys and vehicles, coordinated with U.S. intelligence for “precise and timely” attacks.

• Light option: Focus on intelligence‑sharing, logistical support and joint operations with Nigerian forces to counter Boko Haram and other Islamist groups accused of mass killings, abductions and church attacks.

Senior Pentagon officials acknowledge that limited airstrikes or drone operations are unlikely to end Nigeria’s long‑running insurgency unless the U.S. launches a full‑scale campaign like those in Iraq or Afghanistan — an approach that Washington is not currently considering.
